- Sant’Erasmo - The journey to Sant’Erasmo island, affectionately known as “Venice’s vegetable garden,” involves a delightful 30-minute Vaporetto ride across the lagoon. Historically a rural escape for aristocrats and the primary supplier of fruits and vegetables to the Republic of Venice, the island now serves as a serene, tourist-free haven for Venetian families and a distinctive natural gem in the Northern lagoon.
- Isola di Sant’Erasmo - Upon arrival, a stroll along a quaint road lined with canals and ditches leads to the bike rental shop, where countryside bikes are available.

- Isola di Sant’Erasmo - Cycling around the island: The bike ride offers scenic views of the lagoon, vegetable fields, and saltmarshes, with sights of the San Nicolò harbor mouth at Lido island, Punta Sabbioni, and fields adorned with traditional rural homes.
- Isola di Sant’Erasmo - Visit to a local honey producer: A visit to a small, family-run apiary that produces local saltmarsh honey is included.
- Ridotto di Sant’Erasmo - The northern part of the island offers views across the water and mud banks towards the islands of Burano, with its distinguishable colorful houses, and San Francesco del Deserto, home to a monastery inhabited by Franciscan monks.
- Sant’Erasmo Chiesa - A church with a lagoon view: The visit includes one of the island’s few significant buildings, the church, which faces the tranquil lagoon waters.
- Sant’Erasmo - The return to Venice Fondamente Nove is by water bus, or there is the option to remain on the island for lunch or dinner at a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the lagoon.

Let’s embark on a cycling journey through ‘Orto di Venezia’ (Venice’s ‘vegetable garden’), passing through farms of artichokes, and revel in the unusual yet picturesque sight of the Venice skyline, whilst savouring the distinct flavour of the honey, exclusively produced on this island.
Bicycle across the island’s shores and agricultural lands, taking in the uncommon and breathtaking views of Venice from a unique vantage point. Witness the island’s unparalleled natural allure and the tranquil, conventional lifestyle of its sparse population. Despite being the biggest island in the lagoon, Sant’Erasmo is home to merely 700 residents, most of whom cultivate their own land and produce remarkable fruits and vegetables.
Of the fascinating crops grown, the distinct purple artichokes, officially recognized as a slow food® presidium in the name “Carciofo Violetto di Sant’Erasmo”, is one of the most interesting. Moreover, beekeeping is a common occupation here: bees are attracted to the diverse flowers thriving on the salty soil, thereby producing a unique form of honey that you will have the chance to sample.
As you pedal, you will observe a variety of crops cultivated by local farmers, as well as stunning untamed landscapes, and spot Venice’s bell towers from a distance.
