Constructed in 1792 in the neoclassical style after a public competition won by Canova’s associate Giannantonio Selva, Teatro La Fenice was originally one of several private venues for performances and operas. In December 1836, a significant fire destroyed its interior, but it was reconstructed a year later, akin to the legendary phoenix that rises from its ashes. Throughout the 19th century, La Fenice was the site of world premieres for many operas, including Rossini’s Tancredi, Sigismondo, and Semiramide, Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Beatrice di Tenda, Donizetti’s Belisario, Pia de’ Tolomei, and Maria de Rudenz, as well as Verdi’s Ernani, Attila, Rigoletto, La traviata, and Simon Boccanegra.
With a seating capacity exceeding a thousand, La Fenice offers superb acoustics, which were further improved after its reconstruction following a catastrophic second fire in 1996. It features a 98-member orchestra and a 66-member chorus, attracting enthusiastic local audiences and a substantial international fan base.
