- Piazza San Marco - Piazza San Marco, also known as St. Mark’s Square, stands as one of Venice’s most renowned and historically important sites.
The square is encircled by notable structures such as the Basilica di San Marco (St. Mark’s Basilica), the Campanile (bell tower), the Doge’s Palace, and the Procuratie.
- St. Mark’s Basilica - Initially constructed to enshrine the relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist, which, according to legend, were secretly brought from Alexandria in 828 AD by Venetian traders.
Saint Mark became Venice’s patron saint, and the basilica was built in his honor.
- Doge’s Palace - The Doge’s Palace was the official residence of the Doge of Venice, the highest authority of the Venetian Republic.
For centuries, it served as the political and administrative hub of Venice, where the Doge and the ruling councilors managed state affairs.
- Bridge of Sighs - The Bridge of Sighs crosses the Rio di Palazzo, linking the interrogation rooms in the Doge’s Palace to the New Prison (Prigioni Nuove) in Venice.
Constructed in 1600, it provided a route for prisoners from the courtroom to the prison cells.
The term “Bridge of Sighs” was popularized in the 19th century by Lord Byron, the English poet, who romanticized the idea that prisoners would sigh at their last glimpse of beautiful Venice through the bridge’s small windows before being incarcerated.
- Ponte dell’Accademia - The existing Ponte dell’Accademia was erected in 1933, replacing an earlier wooden bridge.
It spans the Grand Canal, linking the San Marco district near the Accademia Gallery to the Dorsoduro district.
- Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute - This basilica was constructed in the 17th century as a votive offering to the Virgin Mary for saving Venice from a severe plague outbreak in 1630-1631.
The Senate of Venice pledged to build a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary “of Health” (della Salute) if the city was spared further devastation.
