Puffins, Volcanoes, and Family Fun: Our Unforgettable Vestmannaeyjar Adventure

When I heard about the Vestmannaeyjar Adventure, the promise of puffins, volcanoes, and rugged beauty was irresistible. Join me as I recount our unforgettable family day out in the Westman Islands, filled with laughter, learning, and breathtaking sights.

Setting Sail to Vestmannaeyjar

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that can captivate both adults and children alike. When I heard about the Vestmannaeyjar Adventure, I knew it was a must-do. The allure of puffins, volcanoes, and the rugged beauty of the Westman Islands was too tempting to resist. So, with rain jackets packed (because, let’s face it, Iceland’s weather is as unpredictable as a toddler’s mood), we set off from Reykjavík on a cozy 19-seat minibus.

The journey to Landeyjarhöfn was filled with laughter and anticipation. Our guide, Anastasia, was a gem. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and her knowledge of Iceland’s history and culture was impressive. She kept us entertained with stories and fun facts, making the two-hour drive fly by. Once we reached the ferry, the excitement was palpable. The short 30-minute ride to Heimaey was a breeze, and as we approached the island, the dramatic landscape began to unfold before us.

Puffins and Volcanoes Galore

Our first stop was the iconic Elephant Rock, a natural wonder that left us all in awe. The kids were thrilled, pointing out how the rock truly resembled an elephant dipping its trunk into the sea. It was a perfect photo opportunity, and Anastasia was more than happy to snap a few family shots for us.

Next, we headed to Stórhöfði cape for some puffin spotting. These adorable “clowns of the sea” were a hit with everyone. Their vibrant beaks and comical waddles had us all giggling. Anastasia shared fascinating insights about their life at sea and their nesting habits, which kept the kids engaged and curious.

After our puffin adventure, we visited the Eldheimar Museum, known as the ‘Pompeii of the North.’ The museum offered a poignant look at the 1973 volcanic eruption and its impact on the island. It was a humbling experience, and even the kids were captivated by the stories of resilience and recovery.

Hiking and History

Post-lunch, we explored Skansinn, where the striking Stafkirkjan, a Norse ‘Viking’ Wood Church, stood proudly. The kids loved the bold black hues and the tales of Vikings that Anastasia shared. The views of the cliffs and harbor were breathtaking, providing a serene backdrop to our island exploration.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the hike up Mt. Eldfell. The climb was exhilarating, and reaching the summit rewarded us with a panoramic view that was nothing short of spectacular. The sprawling lava fields, the charming town below, and the vast ocean beyond created a scene that will forever be etched in our memories.

As we made our way back to the harbor, we had the option to explore the town or wander through the lava fields. We chose the latter, and it was a decision well made. The kids enjoyed the freedom to roam and discover, while we soaked in the natural beauty surrounding us.

In the late afternoon, we regrouped at the harbor for our ferry ride back to the mainland. The day had been packed with unforgettable adventures, and as we sailed back to Reykjavík, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the memories we had created as a family. The Vestmannaeyjar Adventure was everything we hoped for and more, and I highly recommend it to any family looking for a unique and enriching experience in Iceland.
