After a two-hour drive, we’ll arrive at Landeyjarhöfn for a swift ferry ride to Heimaey, taking just 30 minutes. Prepare for a day brimming with joy and island wonders!
• Halldórsskora (Elephant Rock) - Upon arrival, be prepared to be captivated by the stunning Elephant Rock (Halldórsskora)! Formed from basalt rock during Eldfell’s volcanic eruption, it’s a marvel to witness. With its distinctive shape resembling an elephant dipping its trunk into the sea, it’s like nature’s own sculpture garden.
• Storhofdi (Great Cape) - Next on our itinerary, get ready for a magical puffin-watching experience at Stórhöfði cape! Have your cameras ready as there will be ample chances to capture delightful images of these charming birds as they engage in their daily activities. Puffins, with their amusing waddle and colorful beaks, are the true VIPs (Very Important Puffins) of the Westman Islands. Often called “sea parrots” or “clowns of the sea,” Puffins spend 8 months at sea fishing in the winter, returning to land only for mating and nesting from mid-April to August.
• Eldheimar - Following our puffin-watching adventure, our next destination is the Eldheimar Museum, affectionately known as the ‘Pompeii of the North,’ where you’ll delve into the events of the 1973 volcanic eruption and its enduring impact on the area. After this enlightening visit, we’ll head downtown for a lunch break (lunch expenses not included in the tour price).
• Skansinn - Post-lunch, our journey continues to Skansinn, situated by the harbor and named after a historical fortress that once stood here. Here, you’ll explore Stafkirkjan, a remarkable Norse ‘Viking’ Wood Church painted in striking black hues. Additionally, don’t miss the breathtaking views of the cliffs guarding Heimaey’s harbor, providing a picturesque backdrop to your island exploration.
• Eldfell - Next, we’re setting off on an exhilarating hike up Mt. Eldfell Volcano, renowned for its dramatic 1973 eruption. Once we reach the summit, prepare to be amazed by the stunning panorama that unfolds before you – a mesmerizing view of expansive lava fields, the charming town, and the entire island spread out below like a patchwork quilt. After the hike, you’ll have the freedom to leisurely explore the town or choose a captivating stroll through the fascinating lava fields on your way back to the harbor. The choice is yours!
• Vestmannaeyjar - In the late afternoon, we’ll reconvene at the harbor to board the ferry back to the mainland, ensuring a timely return to Reykjavik by evening. It’s the perfect conclusion to a day filled with unforgettable adventures in the enchanting Westman Islands!
