Rafting the Zambezi: A Family Adventure at Victoria Falls
Drawn by the allure of the Zambezi River and the promise of a family-friendly rafting adventure, I embarked on a journey to Victoria Falls. What I discovered was a community rich in culture and kindness, offering an unforgettable blend of adventure and connection.
A Warm Welcome to the Zambezi
As a museum curator with a passion for creating interactive exhibits for children, I am always on the lookout for family-friendly adventures that blend education with entertainment. When I heard about the Zambezi River Family Rafting experience, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to explore the natural wonders of Victoria Falls with my family. Our journey began with a warm welcome from the Chisuma community, where we stayed at the charming Mpala Guest House Farm. The community, nestled in a beautiful natural setting, immediately made us feel at home. We were introduced to the friendly locals, including Melody, Michelle, and Japhet, who shared their love for the land and its traditions.
The guest house, a mere 15-minute walk from the Zambezi River, offered a unique glimpse into a self-sufficient lifestyle. The community lives off their own produce, and we were treated to delicious meals prepared by Melody and Michelle, who introduced us to local dishes. Our days were filled with exploration, as we embarked on a 30-minute walk through breathtaking landscapes, passing herds of goats and encountering baboons. The walk culminated at a cliff overlooking the Zambezi River, offering a stunning view of Zambia on the other side.
Rafting the Gentle Rapids
The highlight of our trip was undoubtedly the rafting adventure on the Zambezi River. Guided by Japhet, a passionate local with a wealth of knowledge about the river and its surroundings, we embarked on a journey through gentle Class I and II rapids. The experience was perfect for our family, providing just the right amount of excitement without being overwhelming for our children. As we navigated the rapids, Japhet shared stories about the river’s history and the significance of the Batoka Gorge, enriching our understanding of the area.
The rafting trip also included opportunities to swim and play on the river’s pristine white sand beaches. Our children delighted in the chance to take the plunge with exciting rock jumps, while my wife and I marveled at the breathtaking views of the iconic Batoka Gorge. The combination of adventure and natural beauty made for an unforgettable family experience, one that we will cherish for years to come.
A Community of Kindness and Song
Beyond the thrill of rafting, what truly made our trip special was the warmth and kindness of the Chisuma community. In the evenings, we gathered in a communal outdoor dining area, sharing meals and stories under a thatched roof. The community’s zest for life was infectious, and we were deeply moved by their songs and ceremonies. We had the privilege of attending a ceremony to honor their departed loved ones, where the community sang and walked around the graves, offering prayers led by a priest.
The sense of spirituality and connection to the land was palpable, and it was a privilege to be part of such an authentic experience. As the sun set over the Zambezi, casting mesmerizing hues across the sky, we felt a profound sense of gratitude for the time we spent in this magical place. The combination of adventure, culture, and community made our trip to Victoria Falls truly unforgettable, and we left with a deeper appreciation for the beauty and resilience of the people who call this place home.
