Museums and art galleries are filled with images of women, both nude and elegantly dressed, realistic and highly idealized. Who are these captivating women - brides or courtesans, villains or heroines - and what stories do they tell?
This tour offers insightful answers to these questions. Participants will not only hear the tales of heroines from renowned paintings but also explore the cultural messages these masterpieces convey.
Artworks by Titian and Bellini will reveal why Diana is portrayed nude and how this connects to young girls’ fascination with ponies and unicorns. In the Venetian and Florentine painting collections, we will explore why Venetian courtesans gaze at us with pride from their canvases, while saints, in contrast, demurely lower their eyes.
Madonnas by Raphael and Perugino will illustrate how Holy Scripture reinforced moral values through female imagery, and portraits of Spanish princesses by Velázquez will demonstrate the extent of neckline permitted to women in power (even to this day).
This art tour is perfect for those eager to view timeless masterpieces from a fresh perspective.
