- Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna - The Museum of Fine Arts / Art History Museum evolved from the art collections of the royal House of Habsburg. The picture gallery collection is one of the largest and most significant of its kind globally. Highlights include unique works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, as well as masterpieces by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Raphael, Caravaggio, Velázquez, and Italian Baroque painters.
- Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) - The Natural History Museum’s origins trace back to the imperial collections of the 18th century. “Dedicated to the kingdom of nature and its exploration,” the building, exhibitions, and collections create a total work of art with a unique atmosphere.
- Ringstrasse - Cross the Ringstraße, a circular grand boulevard that serves as a road around the historic central part of Vienna.
- Burgtor - Palace gate. In 1809, Napoleon caused significant damage to the city walls. Between 1821-1824, a new gate for the Hofburg was constructed, known as the Burgtor; it is the only remaining gate of the city’s walls.
- Heldenplatz - Historic Heldenplatz (Heroes’ Place), once planned as an extensive imperial forum, is dominated by the monumental equestrian statues of Prince Eugen and Archduke Karl. This location offers the best view of the Imperial Palace and the adjacent Volksgarten.
- Neue Burg - The Imperial Palace, which was home to the imperial family until 1918, now houses the office of the Federal President, an important congress center, and numerous art collections.
- The Hofburg - The imperial palace (Hofburg) was originally a castle built in the thirteenth century, later expanded into a splendid residence as the Habsburgs’ power and realm grew.
- Wiener Hofburgkapelle / Wiener Hofmusikkapelle - Gothic Imperial Chapel, where the Vienna Boys’ Choir performs during High Mass on Sundays, is a remnant of the Imperial Palace from the Middle Ages.
- Burggarten - The Hofburg Palace Gardens. The Burggarten, formerly known as the Emperor’s Garden, was established in 1819. It was built on the foundations of a former fortified compound, the Augustinerschanze.
- Schmetterlinghaus - The Palm House in the Burggarten. The Butterfly House in the town center.
- Albertinaplatz - The Graphic Art Collection of the ALBERTINA Museum offers a comprehensive survey of art: founded in 1776 by Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, this collection now contains over one million drawings and prints from the late Gothic to the present. From Michelangelo and Dürer to Rembrandt and Rubens, and from Klimt and Schiele to Picasso and Richter and Lassnig, the ALBERTINA Museum’s collection provides a rich overview of 600 years of art history. Due to their light sensitivity, the museum’s masterpieces cannot be permanently displayed. Therefore, these works are shown in accordance with strict conservation standards as part of special exhibitions.
