- Icelandic Mountain Guides by Icelandia - Mýrdalsjökull Base Camp - The tour begins base nearby the Mýrdalsjökull glacier in South Iceland. We start by going over the tour plan and safety instructions. From the base we cross some small rivers and head down to the black lava sands fields which derives from the dormant volcano Katla. Down by the black beach we stop and enjoy the amazing view up to the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and along the coast to the southernmost part of Iceland, the small peninsula Dyrhólaey. We then head along the coast to the famous aircraft wreck, from there we continue to the river Jökulsá and up to the foot of the mountain. Upon our return we follow the mountain back to the base.
The ATV experience itself lasts approximately 2 hours. You will ride 2 people per ATV, with one driving and one as a passenger. If you are traveling alone, or in an odd-numbered group (3, 5, 7 etc.) there is an additional charge payable locally for single riders.
The adventure will provide stunning photo opportunities in good weather, so don’t forget to bring your camera!
You will be provided with everything you need for a safe and comfortable ride. No ATV experience is required to take part and the skill level for this activity is deemed as ‘easy’.

The meeting point is located just off Road 222, also known as Mýrdalsjökull Road, near Vík in South Iceland.
Look for the Icelandic Mountain Guides Base Camp sign and parking area.

Great ATV ride on the black sand beaches - Our family visited from the US in October. Mom chose not to go but Dad and two daughters (30 and 25) went. Family friends had gone in 2024 and recommended the Black Sands ATV tour. It did not disappoint. We had a great time riding all over the terrain, including crossing small rivers, on the 2 hour trip. Hinrik and Bjarki were our tour guides. They were very professional and friendly. We felt very safe even though we were complete novices on the ATVs. We especially enjoyed the stop on the beach and the explanation of the nearby volcanoes. The airplane visits were also really cool and we got some great pictures.

Awesome experience! - Awesome experience, lovely way to see the iconic black sand beaches! And Gary was a terrific guide doing a great job making sure everyone could keep up with the pace. Can recommend the experience for all ages and riding experience levels.

Fun in the untouched wild - It was awesome. So much fun!! Our guide was amazing. Do it!! Like it was way more fun than we even thought and If your group is faster you will get to see more.

10/10 would do again - This activity is a MUST if you’re in Iceland. Pawel is a very professional guide and would definitely recommend him to all friends and family.
He took us to three different locations, each more astonishing than the last. He also gave us wonderful info for each place so I could appreciate it more.

The highlight of our trip! - It was the highlight of our trip! We had the best tour guide, Pawel, who was so fun and informational - giving us the history of each monument. Pawel kept the group safe while bringing us to adventurous sites. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is visiting Iceland.

Asgeir was the best guide! - This was the best thing we did in Iceland. Our guide, Asgeir, was fantastic! He made our tour informative and funny. He laughed with us and did the most engaging presentation. I will recommend this tour company to all of my friends. This is a must do!!!
