Visitors will see landmarks such as the Wine Caves, Ouro Street, Clerics Church, Rabelo Boats (which transported wine barrels from the river’s north), and the Douro Estuary, a protected wildlife area.
- Douro Marina - Opened to the public in February 2012, Douro Marina involved an investment of 8.5 million euros, with 2.5 million allocated to floating equipment. The marina can accommodate 300 vessels up to 20 meters long and includes facilities for boat repair and maintenance, shops, restaurants, and water sports companies.
- Centro Interpretativo do Patrimonio da Afurada - Located near the Douro River’s mouth, Afurada is home to 6,500 residents. Its early inhabitants primarily engaged in fishing, which remains the main economic activity.
- Ponte da Arrabida - The Arrábida Bridge, an arch bridge over the Douro River, connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. Built in 1963, it once held the record for the largest reinforced concrete arch in the world. It was the second bridge for road traffic between Porto and V. N. Gaia, following the Luís I Bridge. The bridge was inaugurated on June 22, 1963, with four lifts for pedestrian access, although these ceased operation in the mid-1990s.
- Museu do Carro Electrico - Established in 1992, the Tram Museum showcases a significant collection of electric cars and vehicles with historical value. Located in the former Massarelos Thermoelectric Plant, built in 1915, the museum offers insight into the history of Porto’s rail-based public transport. Visitors can experience the early 20th-century tram design, featuring movable seat backs for directional choice. A ride on Line 1 offers stunning views along the route.
- Igreja da Confraria das Almas do Corpo Santo de Massarelos - Constructed in 1776, the church is divided into three sections by pilasters. The central section features a gate with a broken pediment and a niche displaying the patron saint, S. Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, flanked by Corinthian columns. The facade includes tiled surfaces, side windows, a circular window, bell towers with iron crosses, and a clock between the towers.
- Alfandega Porto Congress Centre - Designed by French architect Jean Colson in the late 19th century, the New Customs building reflects Oporto’s mercantile dynamism. The structure contrasts with the older Ribeira architecture, using iron, stone, bricks, and wood. It features ashlar pillars, stone vaults, iron columns, and a unique Riga oak roof. The Congress Centre is one of the largest and most awarded in the country.
- Passeio das Virtudes - The Virtudes Municipal Park, once the “Companhia Hortícola Portuense,” was designed by José Marques Loureiro and acquired by Porto City Hall in 1965. Renovated in 1998, the vertical garden offers terraces with views of the Alfândega, Douro River, and Vila Nova de Gaia. The Crystal Palace, designed by Thomas Dillen Jones, was modeled after London’s Crystal Palace and features gardens by Emil David.
- Torre dos Clerigos - The Clérigos Tower, designed by Nicolau Nasoni, stands over 75 meters tall and was completed in 1763. Initially a bell tower, it also served as a navigation and military point. Visitors can climb 225 steps for panoramic views of Porto and Gaia.
- Cais De Gaia - The Vila Nova de Gaia waterfront has been a key shipyard and trading post since the 18th century, known for Port Wine. The Rabelo boats docked here, unloading wine barrels for aging in Gaia’s cellars. A refurbishment completed in 2003 enhanced the quay’s appeal for leisure and tourism, earning a ‘Tourism Award - Enhancement of Public Space.’ The area hosts about 30 wine cellars offering guided tours and tastings.
- Barcos rabelos - Rabelo boats, native to the Douro River, transported Port Wine from the remote wine region to Vila Nova de Gaia’s cellars. Before roads and railways, the river was the sole transport route, requiring skilled sailors to navigate its treacherous waters. The last wine transport voyage occurred in 1964 after the railway’s completion.
- Ribeira Square - Ribeira is one of Porto’s oldest and most popular areas, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known for commerce and activity due to its river proximity, it was home to the heroic Ribeira’s Duque, who saved many from drowning. A square near the Luís I Bridge pillar honors him with a memorial stone.
- Jardim do Morro - Located by the upper deck of Luís I bridge, near Serra do Pilar, Morro Garden features lush greenery, a playground, an open-air auditorium for shows, and a belvedere with panoramic views of Porto and the Douro River.
- Serra do Pilar Viewpoint - The Serra do Pilar Monastery, a 17th-century church and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is noted for its circular floor plan and hemispherical vault. The church and cloister, both National Monuments, feature gilded woodwork and a circular vault supported by Ionic columns. The monastery served as a military base during historical conflicts and is now an artillery barracks.
- Ponte de Dom Luis I - The Luís I bridge, a key connection between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, spans 395 meters and features two decks. Designed by Théophile Seyrig, who collaborated with Gustave Eiffel, the bridge was completed in 1888 and remains a city landmark.
- Reserva Natural Estuario do Douro - The Douro Estuary Local Nature Reserve, covering 66.35 hectares, is located near Afurada and includes Cabedelo and São Paio Bay. It is a vital habitat for birds along the “East Atlantic Route” migratory corridor. Visitors can explore the area via a suspended walkway.
- Jardim do Passeio Alegre - Designed in the late 19th century by Émile David, the Passeio Alegre Garden is a Public Interest Property rich in flora, with centuries-old trees. Visitors can enjoy the shade and view where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean. The garden features a granite fountain by Nicolau Nasoni, two obelisks, a bandstand for concerts, and public toilets built in 1910.

“A Beautiful and Relaxing Douro River Experience - We had a wonderful experience with this tour operator. Our 2:30 PM Douro River tour on 2/26 was the highlight of our time in Porto. Our guide was fantastic—she shared fascinating historical stories about the early settlers along the Douro and pointed out important landmarks on both sides of the river. We also appreciated her local food recommendations and the chance to enjoy a glass of Port wine while taking in the scenery.
A big thank‑you as well to our skipper for navigating the river safely and smoothly during the nearly two‑hour ride. The whole experience was relaxing, informative, and beautifully paced. We enjoyed every minute of it and will definitely look for bbdouro again the next time we return to Porto.

Basic boat tour up and down the river - Nothing special really. Good way to pass the time if you need a break from walking the steep streets of Porto.
