• Ponte da Arrábida - The Arrábida Bridge spans the Douro River, linking Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia. Since the 1930s, there was a need for new connections to the older bridges (Ponte D. Maria Pia and Ponte Luís I) to accommodate increasing traffic. When it was built in 1963, the bridge boasted the largest concrete arch of any bridge worldwide. The Arrábida Bridge was the second road bridge between Porto and V. N. Gaia, and is one of six bridges in Porto. These bridges, in order of construction, are the Luís I Bridge, the Arrábida Bridge, the São João Bridge, the Freixo Bridge, and the Infante Bridge. On June 22, 1963, Nuno Pinheiro Torres inaugurated the Arrábida Bridge, featuring four elevators to help pedestrians traverse the seventy-meter distance from the river to the deck, making crossing much easier.

• Cais da Ribeira - Ribeira is one of the oldest, most popular, and typical areas in the city. It is part of Porto’s Historic Center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with medieval origins. This area has always been bustling with trade and people due to its proximity to the river. One of the city’s most notable and charismatic figures, the Duke of Ribeira, lived here. He became famous for saving several people from drowning, and in his honor, a tribute was made after his death. The square next to the Pillar of the Luís I Bridge bears his name and features a memorial.

• Ponte de Dom Luís I - The Luís I Bridge is the primary link between Porto and the neighboring town of Vila Nova de Gaia. Constructed of metal, the bridge is approximately 395 meters long and 8 meters wide, with two decks connecting the upper and lower parts of the city. Théophile Seyrig, who had previously collaborated with Gustave Eiffel on the D. Maria Pia Bridge, designed it under the commission of King Luís I, after whom it is named. Completed in 1888, the Luís I Bridge remains one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

• Reserva Natural Estuário do Douro - Covering 66.35 hectares, the Douro Estuary Local Natural Reserve is located on the south bank of the river mouth, near the Afurada fishing village, and includes Cabedelo and São Paio Bay. Among the natural treasures it safeguards, the birds that reside or migrate through here are particularly noteworthy, as it lies on the migratory path known as the “East Atlantic Flyway.” Visitors can explore the area freely via the suspended walkway.

• Barcos rabelos - Rabelo boats are traditional vessels of the Douro River. For decades, they transported the renowned Port Wine from the remote wine region to the cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. Before roads or railways existed, the river was the sole means of transporting barrels. At that time, no dams had been built, making the Douro River treacherous, with swift currents that were especially perilous in narrow channels. Navigating these waters required skilled sailors to safely deliver the precious cargo. With the completion of the railway, it is believed that the last voyage of these boats for Port Wine transport occurred in 1964.

• Museu do Carro Eléctrico - Established in 1992, the Electric Car Museum aims to preserve and showcase a wide range of electric cars and other vehicles of significant historical and cultural value. It offers visitors the chance to learn about the history and evolution of rail-based public transport in Porto. The museum is housed in a building that once served as the Massarelos Thermoelectric Plant, built in 1915 to generate electricity for the city’s electric vehicles. Riding the tram is like stepping back in time, with interiors that remain true to early 20th-century design, dominated by wood and iron. The seat backs have a unique feature: they can be adjusted, allowing passengers to choose their preferred direction during the journey.
