As a biologist with a deep-seated passion for the natural world, the allure of Sicily’s volcanic landscapes was irresistible. The Sicily Volcano Tour promised an adventure that would take me from the depths of the Alcantara Gorges to the heights of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Ascending to the Heart of Etna

Leaving the gorges behind, we embarked on the ascent to Rifugio Sapienza, nestled at 2000 meters above sea level. Our guide, Francesco, shared fascinating insights into Mount Etna’s volcanic activity and its symbiotic relationship with the local communities. The mountain, a living entity, has both nurtured and challenged the people of Sicily for centuries.

The journey to the summit was not without its challenges. High winds had rendered the cable car inoperable, necessitating a switch to buses to reach 2900 meters.
