Additionally, the tour includes a visit to the execution site in the nearby woods, where over 300 resistance members were executed. • The John Frost Bridge - John Frostbrug - Discover the John Frost Bridge over the Rhine in Arnhem, the final bridge targeted during Operation Market Garden. During the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944, part of Operation Market Garden, Hartenstein served as the headquarters for the British Airborne Division amidst intense combat. The bold effort to breach German defenses and seize the Ruhr area to swiftly conclude the war was ultimately unsuccessful, with the Arnhem bridge proving to be a bridge too far. Today, Hartenstein houses personal narratives from British, Polish, and German soldiers, as well as civilians, showcased through the museum’s distinctive historical artifacts.
