Monastery (Al Dayr) - Curious about exploring the less-traveled paths of Petra? Interested in a glimpse of the hidden trails? This adventure, guided by a local expert, starts at the Petra visitors center. It includes a 20-minute drive to the back entrance near Al Bayda. From there, the journey continues with a walk and hike to the Monastery. Surrounded by wild landscapes and panoramic mountain views, it feels like having Petra all to yourself. Upon reaching the Monastery, numerous Nabatean caves, tombs, and carvings await exploration. Climbing above ground level offers breathtaking views and a chance to capture stunning photos at the iconic cave door opposite the Monastery.
-
Qasr al-Bint - After exploring the Monastery and its surroundings, the tour proceeds downhill, where a buffet lunch at the Basin restaurant or a quick bite elsewhere awaits. Following lunch, the tour visits Qasr al-Bint, offering views of the colonnaded street and the great temple.
-
The Colonnaded Street - This street, originally a Nabataean creation, was later refurbished during Roman times. It was one of the main shopping streets in ancient Petra, rebuilt in 106 BC with a width of 6 meters.
-
The Royal Tombs - Overlooking Petra’s heart, the “Royal Tombs” are a majestic collection of grand mausoleums carved into the western face of the Jabal al-Khubtha rock massif, showcasing stunning facades that highlight ancient craftsmanship.
-
Nabatean Theatre - Next, the tour visits the theater, carved into the mountain’s side at the foot of the High Place of Sacrifice. The theater features three rows of seats separated by passageways, with seven stairways ascending the auditorium, accommodating 4,000 spectators. It was carved during King Aretas IV’s reign (4 BC-AD 27), and the Romans later rebuilt the stage’s back wall.
-
Al-Khazneh - The final stop is the Treasury, or Al Khazneh, before exiting through the main Siq. After the theater, the tour heads to the Treasury, standing almost 40 meters high and adorned with Corinthian capitals, friezes, figures, and more. Crowned by a funerary urn, local legend suggests it hides a pharaoh’s treasure. Although its original purpose remains a mystery, the Treasury was likely built in the 1st century BC as a royal memorial. It features two floors, measuring 25.30 meters wide and 39.1 meters high. Here, the tour concludes, hoping this journey through history, nature, and wonder remains with you forever.
-
Siq - After enjoying the Treasury, the day ends with a walk to the visitor center through The Siq, the main road leading to the city. Starting from the Dam and ending at the Treasury, it is a rock canal measuring 160 meters in length, 3 to 12 meters in width, and up to 80 meters in height. The main part of the Siq is a natural rock formation, with the rest carved by the Nabataeans.
