A Rocky Start in the Desert

The sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over the vast expanse of Wadi Rum as my group of thrill-seekers and I arrived at the Rest House in Wadi Rum Village. We were buzzing with anticipation for the Wadi Rum Jeep Tour that promised to take us through iconic desert scenery and treat us to a traditional Bedouin lunch. However, our adventure began with a slight hiccup. Our guide was fashionably late, arriving a good 25 minutes after our scheduled start time. To add to the confusion, he seemed to have mixed up our booking, thinking we were only in for a half-day tour. After a few phone calls and some back-and-forth, we finally sorted things out and were ready to hit the desert.

Despite the rocky start, the moment we set off in our jeep, the chaos of the morning was quickly forgotten. The desert stretched out before us, a mesmerizing sea of red sand and towering rock formations. Each stop on our tour was more breathtaking than the last, with the exception of the Mushroom Rock, which didn’t quite live up to its hype. But the rest of the sights, from Lawrence’s Spring to the majestic rock bridges, were nothing short of spectacular.

Climbing to New Heights

As someone who’s scaled mountains and trekked through deserts, I was eager to tackle the physical challenges that lay ahead. The tour description had mentioned moderate fitness, but I found the climbs to Lawrence’s Spring and the second rock bridge to be quite demanding. The ascent was steep and the sun relentless, but the views from the top were worth every drop of sweat. Standing atop the rock bridge, with the vast desert stretching out below, was a moment of pure exhilaration.

Our guide, once he found his rhythm, was a wealth of knowledge, sharing stories of the Bedouins and the history etched into the rocks. At each stop, we had the chance to explore, take photos, and even try our hand at sandboarding down the famous Red Sand Dune. The thrill of racing down the dune, sand spraying in all directions, was an unexpected highlight of the day.

A Taste of Bedouin Hospitality

Midway through our adventure, we stopped for a traditional Bedouin lunch. Our guide prepared a delicious galayet with vegetables, tuna, and bread, cooked over an open fire. It was a simple yet flavorful meal, and as we sat in the shade of a rock formation, sharing stories and laughter, I felt a deep sense of connection to this ancient land and its people.

The day continued with more exploration, including a walk through the lush Abu Khashaba Canyon, where the contrast of green against the red desert was striking. We even had the chance to feed a camel, a delightful surprise that added to the day’s adventures.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to a secluded viewpoint. Sitting on a mattress, sipping sweet Bedouin tea, we watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable day, and as we made our way back to the village, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the chaos and the beauty of the desert that had made this adventure so memorable.
