-
Khazali Canyon - Located in the heart of the Wadi Rum Protected Area, this peak opens into a narrow fissure about 100 meters long. Its inner walls are adorned with Thamudic, Nabatean, and Islamic inscriptions, along with petroglyphs of humans and animals. Notably, the petroglyphs of feet soles likely held religious significance. In 1932, French epigraphist Savignac documented the engravings and published some in 1934.
-
Um Frouth Rock Arch - One of the most photographed spots in Wadi Rum, the bridge stands about 15 meters above the desert floor. With guidance and possibly some help from a tour guide, the steep climb is manageable. However, for those with vertigo or minor limitations, the scramble can be challenging. The narrow bridge also presents a challenge, but the stunning views over the yellow mountains of Um Fruth are well worth it. Even if one chooses not to climb, visiting is still rewarding.
-
Seven Pillars of Wisdom - Named after T.E. Lawrence’s famous book “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” (1926).
The peak showcases the two geological formations prevalent in Wadi Rum: a granitic basement from the Precambrian era (4.6 billion years old) topped with a thick Early Paleozoic quartz sandstone formation (500 million years old).
-
Mushroom Rock - It’s clear how this landmark got its name—Mushroom Rock stands prominently against the flat sandy valley. A favorite photo spot for Wadi Rum visitors, its rounded head sits atop a stone stem. This unique formation is entirely natural, shaped over centuries by wind and rain, eroding the softer sedimentary rock layers at the base faster than the hardened layer above. Besides being a great photo opportunity, it offers a sheltered area to escape the desert heat, historically attracting Bedouin herders.

Wadi Rum - The Martian allure that makes Jordan’s Wadi Rum a favorite for filmmakers.
With its ochre expanses and dramatic sandstone heights, Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, has long been a favorite for Hollywood filmmakers seeking otherworldly landscapes.
The desert has served as Mars in several blockbusters, including The Martian and Red Planet. It has also been a setting for fictional desert planets in films from the Star Wars franchise and Dune.
This is where Rey faced Kylo Ren, where Paul Atreides had his fevered visions, and where Dr. Mark Watney grew Martian potatoes. It’s also where Aladdin discovered the Cave of Wonders and befriended the Genie. And this is just the beginning, whether it’s a few cracks on the cliff face or a handful of sand from a dune—whichever metaphor fits best here.
In other words, it’s challenging to find a desert with a more extensive cinematic history than Wadi Rum.

The Martian film location - Produced by 20th Century Fox, The Martian is a co-production of the United Kingdom and the United States. Producer Simon Kinberg began developing the film after Fox optioned the novel in March 2013. Goddard adapted it into a screenplay and was initially set to direct, but the project stalled. Scott replaced Goddard as director, and with Damon cast as the lead, production was approved. Filming began in November 2014 and lasted about 70 days. Twenty sets were constructed on one of the world’s largest sound stages in Budapest, Hungary. WADI RUM in Jordan was also used for exterior filming.
-
Lawrence’s House - T.E. Lawrence reportedly stayed here during his desert time. However, the site has a much older history than its namesake. The British general who united Arab tribes against the Ottoman Empire likely took shelter here around 1917. The house itself was built atop a pre-existing structure by the Nabataeans over two thousand years ago. It served as a station for passing caravans. The Bedouin people have a different name for this place, translating to “The Small Palace.” Regardless of the name, it remains a historically rich site that continues to captivate visitors.
Behind the house, a cliff is dotted with towers of small stones precariously balanced. Historically, these structures were waymarkers built by Bedouins to indicate the safest mountain route. In recent years, tourists have begun building their own statues.

Um Frouth Rock Arch - Three reasons to hike up Burdah rock bridge:
- The drive to Jabal Burdah: a gift in itself
- Jabal Burdah, the mountain of cool breezes
- Hiking and scrambling Jebel Burdah
Burdah rock bridge is truly amazing. For those seeking adventure, this tour offers unforgettable desert memories. More details about the Jabal Burdah trip can be found on the Wadi Rum desert tour Burdah rock bridge page.
