- Royal Shakespeare Theatre - This is the first of approximately twelve stops on our 2.1km guided tour. The renowned RST boasts a rich history and is considered by many actors as the pinnacle of their careers. This iconic theatre serves as our meeting point, where we delve into the origins of this famous town.
- Stratford-upon-Avon - At Market Cross, you will find one of the original Market Halls, dating back to 1500 AD, where John Shakespeare frequently traded his artisan gloves. Across the street is Judith Shakespeare’s house, which holds another intriguing story!
- Shakespeare’s Birthplace - Our third stop showcases the living conditions of the young William Shakespeare, who was born into a prosperous Tudor family. The house, dating from the early 1500s, is now a living museum.
- The American Fountain - This historically significant site was home to the Town’s livestock market from 1196, when the settlement first became a Market Town. Two pubs from the Tudor period are also located at this important junction.
- Stratford-upon-Avon - Our next stop is Bell Court, where you can see the Bell that summoned people to the town’s artisan markets, hanging at the main entrance. Bell Court offers a variety of dining and drinking venues.
- Town Hall Stratford upon Avon - At the top of Sheep Street is a junction known as History Corner, where buildings spanning five centuries are visible. These include the birthplace of John Harvard, the founder of Harvard University, and another Tudor-era pub, now called The Garrick Inn.
- Shakespeare’s New Place - Originally built in 1483, Shakespeare purchased this grand retirement home in 1597. It was the largest house in town, with a history as colorful as that of William’s father, John.
- Stratford-upon-Avon - Nearing the end of our tour, you will visit the Guild Chapel, part of the town’s original seat of power dating back to 1269. The Guild Chapel is free to enter and has a fascinating history. Shakespeare’s schoolroom is right next door, and we’ll visit that too!
- Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall - Founded in 1269, the Guild started a school in 1295 that still exists today. William Shakespeare attended it in the late 1500s, receiving an excellent education. It is now a living museum.
- Hall’s Croft - Visit the grand Tudor house where Shakespeare’s eldest daughter, Susannah, lived with her physician husband, Dr. John Hall.
- Holy Trinity Church - Discover the stunning 13th-century church where William Shakespeare was both christened and, 52 years later, buried. It offers a beautiful setting by the river and a pleasant walk back to the theatres.
- The Other Place - Explore the RSC’s third theatre, The Other Place.
- Swan Theatre - Learn about the history of the Theatre complex and why the facade of The Swan is all that remains of the original Shakespeare Memorial Theatre.
