Washington Monument - The tour guide will share insights about the history and significance of the Washington Monument. Designed by Robert Mills and completed by Thomas Casey along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this monument honors George Washington at the heart of the nation’s capital. Its construction occurred in two phases: a private phase from 1848 to 1854 and a public phase from 1876 to 1884. Shaped like an Egyptian obelisk, it symbolizes the timelessness of ancient civilizations and reflects the nation’s admiration and gratitude for its pivotal Founding Father. Upon completion, it stood as the tallest building in the world at 555 feet, 5-1/8 inches.

Its tower is inspired by the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt. Visitors enter Memorial Hall through a grand portico reminiscent of ancient Greek and Roman temple entrances. Memorial Hall boasts eight green granite columns, each 40 feet tall and over four feet wide, a stunning marble floor, and two magnificent murals by Bro. Allyn Cox.

Alexandria’s Christ Church - The tour guide will provide commentary as the church is passed by. Christ Church, an Episcopal church at 118 North Washington Street in Alexandria, Virginia, was designed by Col. James Wren, a descendant of Sir Christopher Wren, as the main church of the Church of England’s Fairfax Parish. To fund its construction, the Fairfax Vestry collected 31,186 pounds of Oronoco tobacco from parishioners. Construction began in 1765 under James Parsons, but after four years, the church remained unfinished. The vestry replaced Parsons with John Carlyle, who completed the building and handed over the keys in February 1773.
