- Mount Baker Scenic Byway - Begin your journey from Seattle and enjoy a picturesque drive towards Mt. Baker via I-5. The Mount Baker Highway (SR 542) links Bellingham to the snow-covered Mt. Baker. Originally constructed in the late 1800s as an access route for the thriving logging industry, the highway’s rich history is well-documented.
Upon reaching Glacier, the road enters the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and is recognized as a National Forest Scenic Byway. The route is lined with towering evergreens and leafy maples, with glimpses of the Nooksack River appearing at various points.
During the summer, the highway concludes at milepost 58 in a parking area, providing access to Artist Point with its stunning views of Mt. Baker’s 10,781-foot summit. This spot is an excellent starting point for hiking adventures on Mt. Baker.
In winter, the road ends at milepost 55, leading to the Mount Baker Ski Area, which holds the world record for the most snowfall in a single season and is known as the birthplace of snowboarding.
- Fragrance Lake - Nestled in the Chuckanut Mountains within Larrabee State Park, just south of Bellingham, Fragrance Lake is a favored destination for geologists like Dave Tucker due to the diverse geological features along the trail. “The trail to Fragrance Lake in Larrabee State Park is one of the most popular [hiking trails] in the Bellingham area,” Tucker noted in his Fragrance Lake Geology Guide.
- Fairhaven Historic District - For those who appreciate excellent cuisine, boutique shopping, a vibrant art scene, and outdoor activities in a quaint town, Bellingham’s Fairhaven Village is a must-visit. A highlight of the Village is its unique local offerings, exclusive to Whatcom County, making it an ideal day trip from Seattle. No visit to Bellingham is complete without checking off a few items from this list.
- Heather Meadows Visitor Center - Constructed in 1940 by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a ski warming hut, the Heather Meadows Visitor Center was meticulously restored using rock and heavy timber to harmonize with the natural surroundings. Situated on a rock ledge at the Austin Pass Picnic Area, it overlooks Bagley Lakes in the Heather Meadows area along the upper reaches of the Mt. Baker Scenic Byway, State Route 542.
- Artist Point - After navigating the Mount Baker Highway, the breathtaking mountain scenery culminates at Artist Point. A brief hike offers magnificent views of Mount Baker, the volcanic peak southwest of Artist Point. Even from the parking lot, visitors can admire the stunning sight of Mt. Shuksan and the North Cascade Range. Hiking trails, including the short Artist Ridge trail, provide opportunities to enjoy the panoramic views.

Nooksack Falls - Nooksack Falls (mile 40)
A short drive off the main highway along Wells Creek Road (a well-maintained dirt road) leads to the viewing area for this enchanting misty waterfall. -
Picture Lake - Picture Lake (mile 55)
For much of the year, this highly photogenic lake marks the furthest point accessible along the Mount Baker Highway. The road encircles the lake, as does a flat and accessible half-mile trail. From the trail (or your parking spot), you can enjoy a stunning view of Mt. Shuksan, beautifully reflected in the tranquil lake. - Seattle - Return guests to the hotel.
