- Mida Creek - This sea inlet stretches approximately 5 km in length. Characterized by its shallow fjords, it is governed by the tides and safeguarded by a network of rhizomes that seem to deter human entry. This marine lagoon, with its lush aquatic plants (of the genus Posidonia) and corals, forms a maze of waterways where the Indian Ocean creates several small islands. Mida Creek is a habitat for numerous fish species and serves as a feeding ground for sea turtles. The warm, shallow waters and silt areas provide a home for millions of snails, crabs, and various other creatures, as well as a sanctuary for many migratory birds from Europe and the Middle East.
Sixty-five bird species, including storks, herons, pink flamingos, marsh waders, marabou, eagles, kingfishers, and the sacred ibis, appear amidst the unique vegetation. During low tide, visitors can walk on the sea bed, where various starfish and crabs, along with crustaceans of unexpected colors and shapes, become visible.
Mida Creek has been recognized by UNESCO as a Bird International Zone and Biosphere Reserve, making it the second largest ornithological reserve in Africa.

After a stroll through the mangrove on the unique boardwalk, the journey continues across the mudflats revealed by the receding tide, where thousands of tiny crabs scurry away from footsteps. Eventually, the water is reached, and a traditional dugout canoe is boarded. The ride mirrors that of local fishermen, and with a bit of luck, the vibrant bird life of the area can be enjoyed, with 65 different species inhabiting the abundant waters of the creek. Following this, the adventure delves deep into the mangrove forest to witness the remarkable amphibious fish known as frogfish or mudskippers, along with the oysters growing on the roots of these magnificent trees.
This is the moment: the sky transforms into beautiful pastel hues as the sun glistens on every ripple of the water’s surface. Await the sunset behind Green Island, then return to the Giriama village to refresh with a freshly picked coconut or a glass of palm wine.
Pickup is available for an additional fee.
- When booking, please let us know whether you prefer to do the experience at low tide or high tide: Low tide: Longer walk, with the opportunity to explore the mudflats and observe their unique wildlife. The landscape is very distinctive and offers a particularly atmospheric natural setting. High tide: Less walking, as we enter the canoe from a point nearer the meeting point. If no preference is communicated, the experience will take place around 4:00 PM regardless of the tide, in order to allow participants to enjoy the sunset over the lagoon. PLEASE NOTE! From february 2026 The boardwalk is currently under maintenance and temporarily inaccessible to guests. We apologize for the inconvenience.
