- Mida Creek - This sea inlet stretches approximately 5 km in length. Characterized by its shallow fjords, it is governed by the tides and safeguarded by a network of rhizomes that seem to deter human entry. This marine lagoon, with its lush aquatic plants (of the genus Posidonia) and corals, forms a maze of waterways where the Indian Ocean creates several small islands. Mida Creek is a habitat for numerous fish species and serves as a feeding ground for sea turtles. The warm, shallow waters and silt areas provide a home for millions of snails, crabs, and various other creatures, as well as a sanctuary for many migratory birds from Europe and the Middle East.
Sixty-five bird species, including storks, herons, pink flamingos, marsh waders, marabou, eagles, kingfishers, and the sacred ibis, appear amidst the unique vegetation. During low tide, visitors can walk on the sea bed, where various starfish and crabs, along with crustaceans of unexpected colors and shapes, become visible.
Mida Creek has been recognized by UNESCO as a Bird International Zone and Biosphere Reserve, making it the second largest ornithological reserve in Africa.

After a walk through the mangrove on the unique boardwalk, we’ll cross the mudflats left by the receding tide, with thousands of little crabs scurrying away from our steps. Then, we’ll finally reach the water and board a traditional dugout canoe. We’ll ride as local fishermen do and, with luck on our side, we’ll have the chance to enjoy the vibrant bird life of the area, with 65 different species populating the generous waters of the creek. After that, we’ll venture deep into the mangrove forest to see the incredible amphibious fishes known as frogfish or mudskippers and the oysters that grow on the roots of these remarkable trees.
Now is the moment: the sky turns to beautiful shades of pastel colors while the sun shines on every ripple of the water’s surface. Let’s wait until it sets behind Green Island, then head back to the Giriama village where you can refresh yourself with a coconut just picked from the palm or a glass of palm wine.
Pickup is offered at an additional cost.
- When booking, please let us know whether you prefer to do the experience at low tide or high tide: Low tide: Longer walk, with the opportunity to explore the mudflats and observe their unique wildlife. The landscape is very distinctive and offers a particularly atmospheric natural setting. High tide: Less walking, as we enter the canoe from a point nearer the meeting point. If no preference is communicated, the experience will take place around 4:00 PM regardless of the tide, in order to allow participants to enjoy the sunset over the lagoon. PLEASE NOTE! From february 2026 The boardwalk is currently under maintenance and temporarily inaccessible to guests. We apologize for the inconvenience.
