• Martinborough - The town square is shaped like the Union Jack, as the town was the creation of John Martin, an Irish Royalist who crafted New Zealand’s first private town.

John’s wife was an Alsace native and planted her indigenous grape varieties such as Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer, which are commonly found there today.
