Do not miss a chance to evoke the Great Western Greenway! - Dermot at Westport Bike Rental was phenomenal! He picked us up at our B & B, shuttled us to Achill Island (right to Grace O’Malley’s tower (Kildavnet), and set us up beautifully for a grand day of biking the Great Western Greenway back to Westport. He offered to pick up the bikes wherever we needed to finish our ride. Throughout the ride he was friendly and informative. We could hardly imagine a better guide. The total experience was terrific. My wife and I will be recommending the trip to anyone heading to Ireland, with special players for Westport bike rental and especially the kind and professional expertise demonstrated by Dermot. Thank you!

A great greenway for avid cyclists! - For cycling enthusiasts, the Great Western Greenway is a must when visiting Westport as the path to Achill is well maintained, scenery is fantastic and of course is weather dependent. We fortunately had stellar weather with sunny skies and mild temperatures to make it enjoyable. E-bikes definitely makes it easier but there are a few caveats to consider. The bike rental shop seemed more geared for cyclists who would only go the full 44km distance or part of it and discouraged a total out and back based on the battery capacities of the bikes. They expected to come pick up the bikes and for us to take the bus back. We did the out & back mostly ( 80+ km) and can tell you that 2 of the 3 bikes make it back with plenty of juice (4 of 5 bars left) while one died with 10km to go. That bike seemed to not be fully charged from the get go or had a faulty battery - so make sure you assess the battery levels before leaving the shop and inquire with the shop about the health of the batteries. My strong daughter having experience with heavy bikes was able to pedal the last bit. Lastly, the seats on the bikes are not the most comfortable even with padded bike shorts we were wearing. So expect to deal with a little discomfort and vary the seat position along with standing and you’ll be fine. The views will be enough to distract you! You’ll have minimal road riding to deal with and the shop does an excellent job with an orientation of the entire experience that awaits you!

Disappointing experience with operator - We received poor directions from operator about how to find the Greenway, so we lost about 45 minutes because of that. My 22 year old daughter and I were given bikes with small front wheels that made keeping up with standard size bikes in our group harder. My husband’s battery ran out before the end of the trip although we were assured it should last 100 km and we biked about 45Km. For the money that we spent (over $90 per person),it was for 8 hour rental but we were told to drop off bikes at endpoint by vendor who was there loading bikes as we road by at 5p, when we still had an hour to ride before our time was actually up. We would have liked to bike around Achill island a bit, as we explained to the operator at the start. Also, I believe we should have been offered a ride back to Westport, but we were not. He stated that he was full. We paid an additional $32 to take a bus back. Feeling ripped off.
