Take this tour! - Max was great. He promptly met my friend and I at designated place to begin our 1.5 hour walking tour around downtown Wilmington and surrounding blocks. It was such a hot day, but we brought water and found relief under trees on benches as Max talked effortlessly about the 1898 coup. We stood on exact spots where blacks and whites took up sides, bringing to life his unfolding narrative of the tragic events of 1898 and the major players who orchestrated it. Max used the book Wilmington's Lie to share historical pics of names in the event to help bring to life what happened. He knew the history well and relayed it smoothly and clearly as we walked the tour. He was open to our many questions and engaged us the entire time.

Learned a whole lot - I loved this tour. Andrew was an excellent guide who was extremely knowledgeable about not just the coup in Wilmington, but about its history in other parts of the state too. I had not heard of this event until we went on this tour, but I left feeling like I had a detailed understanding of this historical legacy. I would say this is a must-visit tour, especially since it's as far as I can tell the only coup-focused historic location in Wilmington

A must for anyone moderately interested in history - The tour provided a thorough review of the political climate in reconstruction era North Carolina and an explanation of how this coup unfolded at the end of the 19th century. The tour guide was knowledgeable and willing to answer questions during the walk making it a great experience.

Thought provoking tour - This is my third tour with Triangle Walking Tours. I had vaguely learned about the Wilmington coup and massacre in school. This tour was very informative and gave an overview of the tour in chronological order. The fact that the mob did not know what the owner of the Wilmington Daily Record looked like, and yet were still prejudice against him, was quite thought provoking.

Andrew gave an excellent tour - I had never heard of this event before, but Andrew did a tremendous job of painting a picture of events, giving an elaborate historical context, and sharing the important role of various figures in this story. I felt like I took part in something important in learning about this event, and applaud Triangle Walking Tours for showcasing a difficult but important part of history.

Proof that walking tours can be art - This was, bar none, the single greatest walking tour I have ever attended. The event was extremely well-crafted, thoroughly researched, and obviously a passion project. The event combined perfectly into an extremely informative look at an extremely important event, as well as a carefully thought out look at the rise of Jim Crow society, racial prejudice, and economic dominance. Blew away expectations, and I would give 10,000 stars if I could.

Excellent and informative and necessary knowledge. - Our tour guide was very informative and passionate about what he was teaching and showing. Took my 12 year old and he was tuned in the whole time. Thank you for giving a tour and teaching this important information.

Very educational. - Very educational and maturely handled tour. You can tell that the people who put it together were very passionate about the history and educating the public about it. I had never heard about the coup before, so this tour really gave me a new perspective and made me really appreciate Wilmington for owning this tragic part of their history.

Good tour, but heavy on information - The tour guide had a lot of information. I had hoped to hear it more from the human experience side rather than the political atmosphere. Of course I wanted both, but I felt like it was heavier on the political environment side of the event. Again, that is important to know and understand, but I feel like the side of the black Americans was underwhelming. I would recommend it for university professors but not the average person interested in the human interest side.

What to Expect on Wilmington Coup Tour - Be prepared for a good amount of walking in some heavy traffic areas, and some less so. Keep up pace!
