Exploring the Future of Gardening at RHS Wisley

Drawn by the promise of future-proof gardening, I embarked on a journey to RHS Garden Wisley. This historic garden, with its innovative research and lush landscapes, offered a glimpse into the future of sustainable horticulture.

A Journey Through Time and Nature

As I stepped into the enchanting world of RHS Garden Wisley, I was immediately enveloped by a sense of timelessness. The gardens, a living testament to the Royal Horticultural Society’s dedication to horticultural excellence, are a delight to visit any time of year. On this particular visit, early summer had painted the landscape in lush greens, a vibrant response to the wet start of the year.

The sheer expanse of Wisley is both exhilarating and daunting. With more to see than one can possibly cover in a single day, I found myself prioritizing areas that resonated with my passion for sustainable gardening. The eastern part of the garden, often overlooked, beckoned with its heather garden, grass garden, and pinetum. Here, the Stone Pine Café offered a tranquil spot to pause and reflect, a perfect setting for a sustainable snack break.

The heart of the garden is dominated by the historic old laboratory building and the serene canal. At the canal’s opposite end lies the walled garden, home to the innovative ‘thinking outside the box’ display. This exhibit, showcasing alternatives to box plants, is a poignant reminder of the vital research conducted at Wisley to support home gardeners in the face of environmental challenges.

Embracing the Future of Gardening

RHS Garden Wisley is not just a garden; it’s a hub of innovation and education. The new RHS Hilltop, the Home of Gardening Science, stands as a beacon of hope for future generations of gardeners. Here, I was inspired by the groundbreaking research aimed at future-proofing our planet. The World Food Garden, with its diverse array of fruits and vegetables, is a testament to the potential of sustainable agriculture.

The Wellbeing Garden offered a serene escape, inviting visitors to sit and reflect amidst nature’s beauty. Meanwhile, the Wildlife Garden buzzed with life, a haven for insects and a reminder of the delicate balance we must maintain in our ecosystems. As I wandered through these spaces, I couldn’t help but feel a renewed sense of purpose in my mission to promote eco-friendly travel and conservation.

The tropical Glasshouse, with its exotic plants, transported me to distant lands while remaining firmly rooted in the principles of sustainability. Each garden within Wisley tells a story, weaving together the past, present, and future of horticulture in a way that is both educational and inspiring.

A Sustainable Experience

My visit to RHS Garden Wisley was not just about exploring beautiful landscapes; it was an opportunity to engage with a community dedicated to preserving our planet’s natural beauty. The gardens are a testament to the power of collaboration, with teams of garden staff, students, apprentices, and volunteers working tirelessly to create a world-class experience.

Even the catering at Wisley reflects a commitment to sustainability. While the challenges of supply costs and staffing are evident, the vegetarian and vegan options were thoughtfully prepared, and the cakes were a delightful treat. The presence of indoor attractions, such as the glasshouse and old laboratory, ensures that even on a rainy day, visitors can immerse themselves in the wonders of Wisley.

As I left the gardens, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the work being done here. RHS Garden Wisley is more than just a destination; it’s a living, breathing example of how we can all contribute to a more sustainable future. For those of us who cherish the natural world, a visit to Wisley is not just a journey through a garden, but a journey towards a better tomorrow.
