• Mammoth Hot Springs - Located at the northern entrance of Yellowstone National Park near Gardiner, Montana, Mammoth Hot Springs is a fascinating collection of natural wonders. Known for its impressive travertine terraces formed by mineral deposits, this site is truly unique. The warm pools here host various thermophilic bacteria, which give the area its characteristic brown and reddish tones.
• Lamar Valley - Often referred to as “America’s Serengeti,” Lamar Valley is Yellowstone’s top spot for wildlife observation. This expansive grassland, shaped by ancient glaciers and the Lamar River, is a crucial habitat for the park’s iconic wildlife. Visitors can see large herds of bison, wolf packs, grizzly bears, elk, pronghorn, and numerous birds from their vehicles or roadside stops. The valley is especially vibrant with animal activity at dawn and dusk.
• Bunsen Peak - Ascend 1,300 feet through forest and meadow to reach the top of Bunsen Peak, named after the German chemist Robert Bunsen, known for his work on geysers and the invention of the Bunsen Burner. The summit provides breathtaking views of the Blacktail Deer Plateau, Swan Lake Flat, Gallatin Mountain Range, and the Yellowstone River Valley. The return journey follows the same path.
• Norris Geyser Basin - As the hottest, oldest, and most active thermal area in Yellowstone, Norris Geyser Basin has been home to thermal features for at least 115,000 years. The basin’s features change daily due to seismic activity and water level variations. Most waters here are acidic, including rare acid geysers. Steamboat Geyser, the tallest in the world at 300–400 feet (91–122 m), and Echinus Geyser (with a pH of about 3.5) are the main attractions.

The basin is divided into two sections: Porcelain Basin and Back Basin. Porcelain Basin, devoid of trees, offers a sensory experience of sound, color, and smell, accessible via a 3/4-mile (1.2-km) trail of bare ground and boardwalks. Back Basin is more wooded, with features scattered throughout, and is encircled by a 1.5-mile (2.4-km) trail of boardwalks and bare ground.

• Mount Washburn - Beginning at the Chittenden Road Trailhead, this route is the shortest path to Mount Washburn. The road offers a wide trail with a steady, gradual incline. Keep an eye out for bighorn sheep and wildflowers. Stay on the trail to protect the delicate alpine vegetation. Bicyclists or service vehicles may be encountered along the way. At the summit, enjoy the view and interpretive exhibits inside the shelter at the base of the fire lookout.
