Yagodina - At 09:00, the journey will commence from your hotel, accommodation, or the airport in Sofia. The drive will begin on a modern highway, constructed over the historic Roman road, Via Militaries. After an hour, the route will turn southward, offering views of the Vucha Dam and leading deeper into the Rhodope Mountains. This promises to be an exhilarating mountain drive! Before reaching the day’s final destination, there will be a stop to explore a beautiful cave. Upon arrival at the hotel, there will be an opportunity to change clothes and hike up a mountain above the hotel, known as the Eagle’s Eye. Comfortable hiking shoes are recommended. Reaching the summit (a 30-40 minute hike) will reward with breathtaking views of the Trigrad Gorge and the Rhodope Mountains.
Discovering the Rhodope Mountains
Diavolsko Garlo - The Devil’s Throat - The day will be devoted to exploring the region’s natural beauty. After breakfast, a hike along the “Devil’s Path” awaits. This remarkable mountain trail is beyond words. With wooden stairs and railings, the 90% slopes can be conquered, allowing for an immersive experience of the heights. Expect to see stunning vistas, waterfalls, and incredible natural formations. The next highlight is a unique cave, “The Devil’s Throat,” named for the river that flows through it. Anything that enters the water does not emerge. The site is steeped in legends and tales, with local lore suggesting it was the entry point for Orpheus into Hades’ realm to rescue Eurydice from the Underworld.
Trigrad - The afternoon will be spent relaxing and enjoying a delightful traditional dinner.
The Devil’s Bridge and Zlatograd
The Ancient City of Plovdiv and the Thracian Civilization
Perperikon - This introduction is crucial for the trip’s continuation, as more of this heritage will be explored. This site is renowned for the Oracle of Dionysus, the god of wine, which was one of the most significant oracles after Delphi, Greece, in antiquity.
Plovdiv Old Town - After exploring this exceptional archaeological site, the journey continues to Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second-largest city. Plovdiv was the European Capital of Culture in 2019 and is one of Europe’s oldest and most artistic cities. A walk through its historical section will include visits to the 1st-century Roman Theatre, the 2nd-century Roman Stadium, and the oldest mosque in the Balkans. The city features an area known as “The Trap,” famous for its small craft beer pubs and restaurants, making it a perfect spot to spend the evening and soak in the atmosphere of this ancient city. Overnight accommodation will be in the heart of Plovdiv.
Koprivshtitsa and the Thracian Temple of Starosel
Thracian Temple Complex Starosel - After a hearty Bulgarian breakfast, the final day begins. The journey heads north to the Central Balkan Mountains. En route, a visit to a Thracian tomb from the 4th century BC will offer insights into the burial traditions of the Thracians, enriching the understanding of these ancient people.
Koprivshtitsa - The next stop is a journey back in time at the National Architectural Reserve Koprivshtitsa. This town holds significant importance in the Bulgarian Revival period and the struggle against the Ottoman Empire. It is impeccably preserved from the 19th century.
