Bago, previously known as Hanthawaddy, is a city and the capital of the Bago Region in Myanmar. Situated 91 kilometers northeast of Yangon, it is an ideal day trip destination for those interested in exploring pagodas and temples, and is a popular pilgrimage site for locals. Bago offers a wonderful escape from Yangon, where visitors can explore the remnants of a former capital, including temples, pagodas, and monasteries. Notable sites include the Shwemawdaw Pagoda, the tallest temple in Myanmar, Kyaikpun Pagoda, Shwetharlyaung Buddha Image, Kanbawzathardy Palace, and various workshops such as pottery and recycled plastic basket workshops. Hinthargone, the birthplace of Bago city, offers a panoramic view of the city. During King Bayintnaung’s reign, the Hantharwady Dynasty was Myanmar’s largest empire. Known to European visitors as Pegu, it was a significant seaport in the 17th century. Visitors can catch a train at 3 pm from Bago station to return to Yangon if desired. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.
