- Yangon (Rangoon) - The meeting point is on Strand Road, directly across from the front of the Strand Hotel. Begin by heading to Nanthida Jetty to observe the bustling activity on the Yangon River and witness the daily commute of people from suburban areas to the city center. From there, board a local public transport bus to Bagayar Jetty. Immerse yourself in the local culture and, if the opportunity arises, engage in conversation with curious fellow travelers. At Bagayar Jetty, take in the vibrant local life; wander through the Banana Market, where you’ll be fascinated by trishaw drivers loading bananas onto their trishaws and the abundance of banana stalls lining the narrow riverside street.
Take a 15-minute walk to Kyee Myindaing Market for an authentic taste of township life in Yangon. Most townships in Yangon have their own markets nestled within their communities, like Kyee Myindaing’s market, which is brimming with everything Burmese. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers display their vibrant colors and fragrances as locals weave through. You’ll also find clothing stores, grocers, greengrocers, butchers, bakers, fishmongers, and more.
Continue walking for another 15 minutes along township streets to explore a series of Buddhist Supply Stores where accessories for Buddhist shrines are locally crafted. Proceed a few minutes further to Koe Htat Gyi Pagoda, known for the Nine Story Buddha Image, featuring a colossal sitting Buddha image and small shops selling books, beads, and wooden or bronze Buddha images. You may also encounter palmists and fortune tellers, as fortune-telling and superstitions play a significant role in Myanmar society. As a local, meet with a fortune teller to learn about your future.
Afterward, a trishaw will transport you through the bustling narrow streets of Sanchaung to Myaynigone. Continue on foot to the People’s Park, which offers delightful attractions such as flower gardens, ponds, fountains, including one with concentric rings of white elephants, and treetop observation platforms connected by fun swinging bridges. Also, visit an Art Gallery at the park’s end.
Proceed to a local tea shop to experience an essential aspect of Burmese life: drinking tea! Choose from a variety of snacks and enjoy a coffee or tea while sitting among local friends and families who gather at the tea shop to socialize or conduct business.
Walk to the Pyay Road Railway Station for another adventure: a train ride on the Circle Line. Opened in 1961, the train transports an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people daily in a loop around the city. This offers a unique, enjoyable, and authentic experience of local life. While waiting for the train, you can explore the interesting city’s backyard scene. Enjoy a 15-minute train ride and disembark at Yangon Central Railway Station, the largest railway station in Myanmar, located downtown, where your local exploration concludes.
