Sri Muthumariamman Temple - The prefix “Muthu” means “pearl,” “Mari” means rain, and “Amman” means mother in Tamil. The temple is dedicated to Mariamman, the goddess of rain and fertility. Originally part of a paddy field, the land was gifted by the owner in 1852. The current temple, built in 1874 and funded by the Nattukkottai Chettiar, is used by both Hindus and Buddhists.

Nine Arches Bridge - Commissioned by the British in 1921, the Nine Arch Bridge is a testament to early 20th-century engineering and architectural brilliance. Located between Ella and Demodara railway stations, walking along the bridge offers views of rolling hills and dense jungle. Also known as the ‘Bridge in the Sky,’ it was constructed by connecting two bog mountains during the construction of the Badulla-Colombo railway. The bridge is 300 feet long, 25 feet wide, and 80-100 feet high, making it one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country.

Rawana Falls - Rawana Waterfall is a popular sightseeing attraction in Sri Lanka, standing 25 meters high. This beautiful waterfall is linked to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. The Ravan Ella (Rawana Falls) is named after the mighty demon Ravana. According to the epic, after kidnapping Sita, Ravana, the king of Sri Lanka, hid her in the caves behind this waterfall. The cave became known as Ravana Ella Cave. It is believed that Rama’s queen wandered around this place while she was confined and bathed in a pool formed by the waterfall.

Buduruwagala Temple - Buduruwagala, meaning “stone images of the Buddha,” is one of the most remarkable spiritual sites located within a rocky clearing of a magical dry zone forest inhabited by colorful birds and butterflies.

Along the beach, there are many small restaurants and cafes serving delicious fresh seafood. Whale Watching Mirissa - Sri Lanka is becoming a major spot for whale and dolphin watching, situated within the International Whaling Commission’s protected zone in the Indian Ocean. Of the 80 species of cetaceans observed and identified worldwide, 26 are found in the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. Mirissa is the main port for whale and dolphin watching in Sri Lanka from December to April.

Weligama Beach - Weligama, meaning ‘Sandy Village’ in the local dialect, is a small fishing town that has recently gained popularity with travelers. Known as an ideal place for beginner surfers, Weligama Beach offers ample space to soak up the sun or enjoy the refreshing waters. A shallow bay shaped like a half-moon provides gentle waters, making it safe for swimming and a great spot to learn how to surf. There are several local surf schools to assist you. The best time to visit and swim at Weligama Beach is between October and April, when the sea is calm and the weather is perfect.

Stilt Fisherman - Stilt fishing is a traditional fishing method practiced by local fishermen in Sri Lanka, especially along the southern coast. With perfect balance and immense patience, fishermen perch themselves on cross-shaped beams and wait for their catch of the day.

Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project - Kosgoda is renowned for its sea turtle conservation project, operated by the Wildlife Protection Society of Sri Lanka. Established in 1988 to protect Sri Lanka’s turtles from extinction, the project has released about 3.5 million baby turtles into the sea. The hatchery pays fishermen for eggs collected at night along the sandy beach. The eggs are buried in the sand, and when they hatch around 50 days later, the baby turtles are released into the sea at night. The hatchery also has tanks for injured or disabled turtles, including albino turtles that would not survive in the sea.

Galle Fort - Galle Fort is a well-preserved fortified city originally built by the Dutch. The story of the Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, resonates through every traveler’s photos and captions. Initially constructed by the Portuguese in the 16th century during their conquests, the fort was later fortified and conquered by the Dutch in the 17th century, before falling to the British. The old town of Galle was once a trading port for spices and other goods for over 200 years.
