Its history dates back to the 7th century when Armenian princes Kamsarakan began its construction. Over time, it evolved into a fortified stronghold, eventually becoming the Pahlavuni family’s residence. The 11th-century commander Vagram Pahlavuni fortified Amberd and commissioned a church named Vagramashen in his honor.
