Borobudur, the world’s most expansive Buddhist temple, is situated in Magelang, around a 1-hour drive from Yogyakarta. Its construction is estimated to have commenced around the year 750. Covering 2,500 m2 on the ground, it comprises of 9 platforms - 6 square and 3 circular - and is crowned by a central dome.

Prambanan, a Hindu temple and the largest dedicated to Shiva, was initiated around 850 by King Ratan Pikatan. With 224 temples in total, the site resides comfortably within a park.
