My wife and I have done a... - My wife and I have done a few cooking events over the course of our travels, but none with our kids in tow. At ages 7 and 5 we were a little concerned that five hours would be tough for them, but Akiko was a great host and made sure the kids stayed engaged or occupied in some way all along. We started in her brother's third-generation noodle shop, learning about what sets ramen noodles apart from other noodles and then what variances there are within the ramen set. While you don't make the dough yourself you do get to choose from several pre-made types and you pick the thickness and shape (wavey or straight) and watch them get made in a pretty cool pressing and cutting machine. We chose 4 different types (there are no bad choices btw). After the factory you stroll about 5-7 minutes to Akiko's home; walking along a stream-lined path and feeding Koi fish if you choose (so our stroll took 20 minutes as the kids really enjoyed the fish feeding). At Akiko's home the kids played with leggos and matchbox cars while we made homemade gyoza (chopping, mixing, stuffing, folding and frying) - getting the kids involved at opportune moments. Akiko provides great instructions, including printed copies to take home - these are recipes handed down from her grandmother who lived above their noodle factory. Following the gyoza we were on to the ramen broth, searing the pork with a blow torch (always fun!), soft boiling the eggs, mixing her premade stock together with some new ingredients...and then it was a quick boil of the noodles, adorn your bowl with your chosen toppings and then slurp away! The gyoza and ramen were top notch, as good as you'd find in any restaurant. Eating in Akiko's livingroom, meeting her family and cute little dog, really made it feel more like a dinner gathering of friends versus a cooking lesson. All in all it was a really cool experience if you like ramen and want to delve a bit deeper into how it's made and what an authentic Japanese dinner experience is like.

Amazing Authentic Japanese Experience - This experience is something everyone visiting Japan should do! An experience that feels warm and welcoming but still very authentic. Akiko and her family are very welcoming. If you are worried about the experience feeling awkward, you have nothing to worry about! It truly feels like you are walking into an experience with family. The tour starts at her brothers noodle factory, where you get to learn about and help make different types of ramen noodles and learn about the history. You then get to take those noodles you make, and bring them into a Japanese home and make a delicious dinner. The gyoza we made were a personal favorite! I’ll be dreaming of them! Akiko was also very accommodating with food restrictions, and was able to accommodate for both pork free and vegan diets. You truly get a taste of Japan by learning her grandparents recipes. 10/10 experience, could not recommend it more! Plus Teddy the dog could not be any cuter!

Exceeded All Expectations - If you’re a ramen foodie or just curious about ramen, this tour takes you from flour to flavor! You start in a third generation ramen factory learning from the guide’s brother, Taka, the basic factory steps of making ramen noodles. But then he takes it further. You learn how different levels of hydration and how different types of flour can be combined to customize a noodle to a shop owner’s preference. That would normally be enough but then Akiko takes it further. You take the noodle texture and thickness of your choice to her house and make an amazing bowl of ramen using traditional family techniques. The hospitality is incredible. The cooking,, learning, sharing, and new friends makes for an incredible experience. Highly recommended!

Super fun and yummy ramen making/cooking experience - My 17yo son and I had a wonderful time with Akiko and her lovely family. This was the highlight of our 11-day vacation. We loved the hands-on ramen making experience conducted by her jovial brother Taka, who is the 3rd generation owner of the family’s ramen factory. Laughed so much as we tried to grab n pack the noodles as they came shooting out of the machine! We also enjoyed learning to cook a 4-course meal (Japanese salad, gyoza, ramen, and dessert) from Akiko, in her elegant apartment. Her gyoza was amazing and we must have polished off at least 20 between us. Akiko also shared practical tips on how to prepare home-made ramen broth without brewing it for hours. We used the ramen noodles that we’d made according to our preference. (We could choose the dough’s texture, thickness, straight/wavy noodles etc). That definitely made our meal taste yummier. What I appreciated most was the opportunity to interact with a Japanese family that is clearly proud of their ramen heritage. My teenage son was originally not that keen to spend his vacation cooking, since it took precious time away from his anime activities. I was pleasantly surprised by how much he enjoyed himself. He even ranked this as his favourite experience on our 11-day trip. High praise from a teenage boy! We definitely recommend this activity to anyone who wants an authentic Japanese experience, plus a delicious meal. We are already planning to recreate Akiko’s dishes from the recipes she provided. Tip: Taka’s noodles are usually sold to his commercial customers but we liked them so much, he let us buy some. We kept them chilled in our hotel fridge and packed them in freezer bags (easy to get from Daiso) in our check-in luggage. The noodles last 10 days. If you want to buy some noodles, time your tour at the tail-end of your trip.

Ramen Experience - It was a wonderful experience. Seeing the entire process and how it’s done was incredible. Akiko San’s brother was very patient in explaining everything at the factory. Later, at Akiko San’s house, we made ramen and gyoza. She was very kind and attentive throughout, and her family welcomed us warmly, along with their very cute dog. Thank you so much, Akiko San, for welcoming us into your home and teaching us about Japanese cuisine. It was clear that you love what you do ❤️
