- Exhibition Square - Immerse yourself in the history of King’s Manor, where Henry VIII stayed with his fifth wife. Learn about the individual who saved the city walls from complete destruction in the 19th century.
- Bootham Bar - The oldest of the four gateways, standing on the Roman entrance into Eboracum. It still retains its portcullis. Once again, we ascend the walls to enjoy views and learn about the history of York Minster. Hear about the fires that nearly destroyed the Minster and catch a glimpse of the city’s most haunted building.

Monk Bar - The tallest of the four structures, it has its unique features; can you spot the “murder holes”? We continue along this section of the walls towards our final destination, learning about the Roman fortress and the once-thriving Jewish community that faced a great tragedy.
At the end of the tour, visitors will receive a map of the city walls, complete with highlighted information and points of interest. From here, they can choose to complete the walls circuit, find solace in the nearby haunted pub called The Black Swan, or return to the city center.

The City of York boasts the most distinctive and well-preserved walls in the nation. These walls have witnessed significant historical events, including heads displayed on Micklegate Bar, a medieval Jewish massacre, and cannon fire during the Civil War in 1644.
Join the award-winning Mad Alice for a chilling walk along the walls as she shares some of the tragic events that have occurred on and around these ancient stones.
This two-hour tour will explore three of the four gateways, offering visitors the choice to either complete the 2.5-mile circuit with the guidebook provided by Mad Alice at the end or return to the city center if the stories become overwhelming.
- This tour involves stairs. Please note that dogs and pushchairs are not permitted on the City Walls.
- In extreme weather conditions, the walls may be closed and locked as per the City of York Council’s protocol. The tour will be cancelled and refunded. You will be notified on the day.
