- Five Wells - Constructed in 1574, this site is named after the five wells that historically provided water to Zadar. As the name suggests, the wells are aligned consecutively, creating a distinctive and captivating appearance for the square.
The square is nestled between the medieval City Walls and the Renaissance Grimani bastion. It also offers access to Croatia’s oldest park, named after Queen Jelena Madijevka, and the 26-meter-tall Captain’s Tower.
- Queen Jelena Madijevka Park - As the oldest public park in Zadar, Queen Jelena Madijevka Park enjoys significant popularity across the nation. It was established atop the Grimaldi stronghold adjacent to the Square of the Five Wells.
- Zadar Land City Gates - Today, all the Walls are safeguarded by UNESCO. The Walls featured several entrances, with the Land Gate (also known as City Gate, or Kopnena vrata in Croatian) being one of the most remarkable.
Historically, the Land Gate served as the primary entrance to the city. It is located in the Old Town, also referred to as Zadar Peninsula, near the small Foša harbor.
Erected in 1543 by Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli, the Land Gate remains one of the most exquisite Renaissance monuments in Dalmatia.
- St. Simon’s Church - Originally built in the 5th century, St. Simeon’s Church has seen modifications up until 1980, and some may find its terracotta and white exterior less impressive compared to other churches. This 17th-century church is renowned for housing the mummified body of St. Simeon, one of Zadar’s patron saints.
The Chest of Saint Simeon is a rectangular cedarwood sarcophagus shaped like a chasse, adorned with silver and silver-gilt plaques, believed to contain the relics of St. Simon the God-receiver. It is positioned above the main altar in the Church of Saint Simeon. The chest, a masterpiece of medieval art and a unique example of the goldsmith’s craft of the era, is among the most fascinating gold works in Europe, now under UNESCO protection. It was crafted by local goldsmiths following an Italian design between 1377 and 1380.
- City Square - Located in the heart of Zadar’s old town, this square has been a central gathering spot for the people of Zadar since the 12th century.
- Nora rooms, Zadar - The Old Town, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, was fortified during Roman times and still retains remnants of a Roman forum. Numerous churches from various eras, all in excellent condition, can be explored. It truly feels like strolling through an open-air museum.
- Sea Organ (Morske Orgulje) - The Sea Organ (Croatian: Morske orgulje) is an architectural sound art installation in Zadar, Croatia, and an experimental musical instrument that produces music through sea waves and tubes located beneath a series of large marble steps.
- Archaeological Museum Zadar - The Archaeological Museum in Zadar houses over 100,000 archaeological artifacts and monuments from all cultural and historical periods. Founded in 1832, it is the second-oldest museum in Croatia and one of the oldest in this region of Europe.
