Marrakech - Talouate - Ait Benhaddou - Ouarzazate - Agdez - Zagora
Atlas Mountains - Departing from Marrakech, travelers embark on a journey through some of Morocco’s most breathtaking landscapes, framed by the majestic Atlas Mountains. The route winds along rugged cliffs to reach small Berber villages in North Africa’s highest mountain range. As the journey continues towards Ait Benhaddou, travelers cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2260m/7400ft) to visit the magnificent Glaoui Kasbah in Talouate and the verdant Ounilla Valley, leading to Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its 11th-century red mud-brick Ksar. Here, a delightful home-cooked meal with a local family awaits.
Draa Valley - The scenic route includes a visit to the “Ouallywood” movie studio and the expansive Taourirt Kasbah. Travelers then descend into the Drâa Valley, a 125km stretch of palm tree oasis that eventually meets the Sahara near M’hamid. At Agdez, a classic caravanserai oasis with a pristine palmeraie, a 17th-century ancient mud-brick Kasbah, and a hidden desert prison, visitors reach a highlight of the Drâa Valley, Tamnougalt, a 16th-century fortified Ksar perched on a hill 6km south of Agdez, before arriving in Zagora.
Zagora - Tamegroute - M’hamid El Ghizlane - Erg Chigaga Desert
Tamegroute - The journey continues to Morocco’s wildest desert via Tamegroute, a unique location that was once the most significant settlement in the Draa Valley, known for its green pottery. The Zawiya Naciria remains a pilgrimage site and refuge for the mentally ill, housing a working Quranic school with a library that was once Morocco’s richest, containing 4000 ancient illuminated texts.
Erg Chigaga - Departing Tamegroute, travelers traverse a stark landscape of sun-scorched terrain to the end of the paved road at M’hamid El-Ghizlane, beginning an off-road adventure to Erg Chigaga. Here, guests can choose to fall asleep under a canopy of stars amidst a stunning expanse of golden sand after dinner.
Erg Chigaga - Foum Zguid - Taznakht - Taliouine
Foum Zguid - As the sun rises, travelers leave Erg Chigaga, heading north to Taliouine via a rugged path out of the desert through the 80km long dry lake bed of Lac Iriki, made famous by the Paris-Dakar rally, and through the Sahel and Reg to Foum Zguid. Then, it’s 85km north to Taznakht, a convenient stop for a quick snack, coffee, fuel, and even carpets. The journey continues to the village of Taliouine, home to the African Centre of l’orrouge (red gold) or saffron, the world’s most expensive spice.
Taliouine - Taroudant- Tizi n’Test - Marrakech
Taroudant - From Taliouine, the route leads to Marrakech via Taroudant, considered one of Morocco’s most elegant purely Berber towns, encircled by majestic, tawny-brown and honey-gold 7km walls. As visitors explore, they may notice the distinctive, beautifully blue veils worn by many of the older local women.
Atlas Mountains - The journey continues along a road carved through the high Atlas Mountains by the French in the late 1920s, renowned for the Tizi n’Test pass, offering one of Morocco’s most spectacular panoramic drives. Heading north to Marrakech, there is a stop at Tinmal village to visit the 1156-year-old mosque.
