Zagreb City Tour
St. Mark’s Square - The city tour begins after breakfast at Saint Mark’s Square, home to the Croatian Parliament and the notable church of the same name. The church, dating back to the 13th century, is renowned for its unique roof displaying the coats of arms of the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia, and Dalmatia, as well as the coat of arms of Zagreb city. We will visit Lotrščak Tower, which features a Greek cannon that fires every noon. At the base of the tower is the cable car, the world’s shortest funicular railway, connecting the Upper and Lower Town for nearly 120 years.
Cathedral of Zagreb - Our next stop in the Upper Town is Kaptol, the main church headquarters, known as the ‘episcopal city,’ dominated by the twin-spired Zagreb Cathedral from 1880. We will pass through the Stone Gate, a remnant of the former royal city Gradec, which was largely destroyed by fire in the early 18th century. Miraculously, the fire spared an image of St. Mary, now housed in the Chapel of the Stone Gate, as St. Mary is the patron saint of Zagreb.
Ban Josip Jelačić Square - Our second stop is Downtown, beginning at Ban Josip Jelačić Square, the city’s heart and main meeting point. From Ban Jelačić Square, Prague Street leads to a series of squares and parks, Zagreb’s counterpart to the Vienna Ring. This “green horseshoe,” designed by Lenuci, is a U-shaped park area of eight green squares forming the backbone of the Lower Town. The “green horseshoe” starts at the Croatian National Theater building, a beautiful 19th-century structure at the center of cultural life, alongside the Fountain of Wells, the University of Zagreb building, and the Museum of Arts and Crafts. As you navigate the Horseshoe, you will reach the Mimara Museum building, from which it is easy to access the Botanical Gardens and the Esplanade, a luxury hotel known as a key destination for travelers from the ‘Orient Express.’
The most popular park in this U-shaped area is Zrinjevac, known for its plane tree alley brought from Trieste over a century ago. This tour, with its beautiful flower beds, is a delight for those seeking relaxation and a treasure trove of monuments, galleries, and museums for art enthusiasts. Named after Croatia’s first king, King Tomislav Square offers a unique view of the Art Pavilion. After the tour, enjoy a free late afternoon for dinner on Tkalčićeva Street, the liveliest street in the center, under which a stream flows towards the Sava River. Nearby Cvjetni Square and its surrounding streets also offer great entertainment.
Overnight at the hotel. Check out the following morning.
Departure for Ljubljana
Ljubljana - Upon arrival in Ljubljana and checking in, head to the main center for sightseeing.
Dragon Bridge (Zmajski Most) - The Dragon Bridge, adorned with iconic dragon statues, is featured in the most recognizable images of Ljubljana. A photo with a Dragon Bridge dragon is a must to claim a visit to Ljubljana. The four dragon statues, slightly intimidating and almost lifelike (if one believes in dragons), have sparked imagination since the bridge’s construction.
Beyond the dragons, the bridge is a unique creation, considered an extraordinary piece of technical heritage and a superb example of Art Nouveau architecture, which thrived at the turn of the 20th century. Built between 1900 and 1901, it was Ljubljana’s first reinforced concrete structure and one of Europe’s largest bridges of its kind. Initially named the Jubilee Bridge of Emperor Franz Joseph I, it was originally designed to feature winged lions instead of dragons. It was Slovenia’s first structure paved with asphalt. The bridge’s construction plans were prepared by Professor Josef Melan, a renowned engineer specializing in reinforced concrete bridges and the father of the theory underlying static calculations for large suspension bridges.
The Dragon Bridge’s Art Nouveau appearance was crafted by Dalmatian architect Jurij Zaninović, a student of the famous Viennese architect Otto Wagner, who also taught Ljubljana’s great architect Jože Plečnik. Zaninović designed the concrete slabs cladding the reinforced concrete structure, the balustrades, and the sheet-copper dragon statues. The bridge’s original decorations also include parapet lamps, once gas-powered.
The Dragon Bridge replaced an old wooden bridge called Butchers’ Bridge, which stood on its site from 1819. The municipal authorities opted for a modern design and reinforced concrete structure mainly for economic reasons, as reinforced concrete construction was far less expensive than the then more common stone construction.
Ljubljana Old Town - Ljubljana’s Old Town is a former fortress located on a hill in the city’s center. In the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the Spanheim family. Between 1220 and 1243, the Duke connected the fort with the settlement of Ljubljana.
In the 14th century, when Ljubljana became the seat of the state of Carniola, the fort housed state dignitaries’ apartments and the emperor’s residence upon his arrival. The fort was damaged in the Turkish wars in the 15th century and subsequently rebuilt. The residential part and the chapel of St. George were restored. From the 17th century, the ruler moved to the city, and the fort declined slightly, leading to its use as a state prison for Carniola and Carinthia in the 19th century.
Between 1845 and 1848, a clock tower was built. During the 20th century, the fortress underwent numerous changes, with the last major renovation occurring in the 1970s when it was repurposed for cultural purposes.
Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) - The Triple Bridge (Slovene: Tromostovje, also known as Tromostje in older sources) is a group of three bridges across the Ljubljanica River. It connects Ljubljana’s historical, medieval town on one bank with the modern city of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, on the other.
The central bridge is partly constructed from Glinica limestone, while other parts are made from concrete. The balustrades, featuring 642 balusters, are crafted from artificial concrete. The platform is covered with granite blocks laid in 2010, replacing the previous asphalt covering.
Prešeren Square - Prešeren Square is a major crossroads in Ljubljana, named after the Slovenian poet France Prešeren. It is located above the left bank of the Ljubljanica River near Tromostovje, opposite the medieval town center.
Due to its location, Prešeren Square is one of Ljubljana’s most transit points. It is connected by several roads, streets, and embankments: Cankarjevo, Adamič-Lundrovo, Hribarjeva, and Petkovškovo embankments, as well as Wolfova, Čopova, and Trubarjeva streets, and Miklošičeva road.
An important feature of the square is the Prešeren Monument, created by Ivan Zajc and architect Maks Fabiani, unveiled on September 10, 1905.
Ljubljana - After sightseeing in Ljubljana, enjoy dinner in the city and return for a restful night.
Departure to Opatija
Postojna Cave - On the way to Opatija, a visit to Postojna Cave is highly recommended. This complex of tunnels, galleries, and halls spans 24,120 meters, making it the largest cave system in Slovenia.
In addition to Postojna Cave, this system includes Otto Cave, Magdalen Cave, Black Cave, Pivka Cave, and several smaller ones. It was formed by the erosion of the Pivka River, whose waters shaped its interior over two million years. The cave’s constant temperature was 8°C until recently, now ranging between 8 and 10 degrees. The maximum depth of the pit is 115 meters.
Lungomare - Lungomare is a 12 km long coastal promenade connecting towns on the Opatija Riviera - Volosko, Opatija, Icici, Ika, and Lovran.
The promenade’s renovation began in 1885, coinciding with the opening of Opatija’s first hotels (Grand Hotel Kvarner, 1884, and Hotel Imperial, 1885). It was completed in 1889 when Opatija was declared a health resort and merged with Lovran in 1911 during the Riviera’s tourism boom.
Along the promenade, memorials were erected for notable figures who lived in Opatija: writer Henrik Sienkiewicz (above Opatija’s port), Doctor Theodore Billroth (on St. James’s Church wall), and General Joseph Pilsudski (in front of the Art Pavilion “Juraj Šporer”).
Part of the Lungomare promenade also passes through the famous central Opatija park.
Opatija - Arrival in Opatija in the afternoon. After checking in, explore the city, enjoy dinner, and rest for the night.
Departure to Plitvice Lakes - Zadar City
Plitvice Lakes National Park - After breakfast, depart for Plitvice. The drive takes approximately 2.5 hours.
Plitvice Lakes is Croatia’s oldest and largest national park, covering nearly 300 km². Established in 1949, it was Croatia’s first national park. Due to a unique tufa formation process (where hot springs create carbonate deposits), UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
Plitvice consists of 16 named and several smaller unnamed lakes, divided into Upper and Lower Lakes. The Upper Lakes are larger with gentler shores, while the Lower Lakes are set in a deep canyon with steep cliffs. The lakes culminate in the impressive Sastavci waterfalls, with the Korana River emerging at the falls’ base.
After a short walk, the tour continues with an electric boat ride across Kozjak Lake, followed by a journey through the limestone canyon of the Lower Lakes to the Big Waterfall. From the “Big Waterfall” to the train station, a steep serpentine path leads to the canyon’s eastern side, offering numerous vistas with unforgettable views of the crystal-clear lakes and high cliffs. Return to the starting point is by panoramic train.
After the Plitvice tour, we head to Zadar, a two-hour drive.
Zadar - Arrival in Zadar late at night, check into accommodation, enjoy dinner in town, and rest for the night.
Zadar City Tour and Departure to Split
Zadar Land City Gates - The historic core of Zadar is over 3000 years old. Walking through this city, you tread where Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Napoleon once walked. It is also the birthplace of the 2018 World’s Best Football Player, Luka Modrić!
The tour includes the historic city center, visiting the Land Gate and Queen Elena Madiev’s Park. From there, proceed to Zadar National Square, a hub of secular life. Next, visit the Zadar Cathedral of Saint Stosije, a Romanesque building and the largest church in Dalmatia, dating from the 12th century.
Continue to the Old Town Square to visit the Roman Forum and Church of St. Donat, a symbol of the city from the early Middle Ages (9th century). The tour concludes with the Greetings to the Sun and Sea Organ. Unlike ordinary organs driven by bellows or air pumps, these organs produce sound through the energy of the sea, waves, and tides.
For those wishing to explore further, there are 24 larger and 300 smaller islands, 3 nature parks (Telašćica, Velebit, and Vransko jezero), and 5 national parks (Paklenica, Plitvice, Kornati, Krka, and North Velebit) in the Zadar archipelago. (An overnight stay in Zadar would be required to visit these.)
In the evening, continue the drive to Split, a two-hour journey.
