- Jambo Spice Farm - The Spice Tour is a standout among Zanzibar excursions, often referred to as the Spice Island due to its global prominence in producing spices such as clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
Beyond just visiting, participants will have the opportunity to smell, touch, and even taste some of the crops cultivated on this island, learning about their original uses. Spices and herbs were introduced to Zanzibar by Portuguese traders in the 16th century, who brought them from their colonies in South America and India. Embark on a guided walking tour of a spice farm, where firsthand observation of the cultivation of spices, herbs, and fruits is possible. A knowledgeable guide will explain the cultivation techniques and various applications of these crops.
During the tour, immerse in the aromas and flavors of spices, herbs, and tropical fruits such as coconuts, papaya, chili, black pepper, cinnamon, turmeric, vanilla, cardamom, cassava, cloves, and lemongrass. After the tour, enjoy a traditional Swahili lunch at the farm.
- Prison Island - Changuu Private Island - Experience the unique charm of Prison Island by taking a ride on a traditional dhow and learning more about Zanzibar’s history. Prison Island is named after the prison built to isolate Zanzibari citizens from the island.
Originally owned by an Arab to house rebellious slaves, the prison was never actually used, and the island now hosts a tortoise sanctuary and a hotel. Prison Island is a 20-minute boat ride from Stone Town and boasts stunning coral reefs to explore.
Giant tortoises roam through the trees with the serene patience that comes with age. Initially believed to be from the Comoros Islands and Seychelles, some of these tortoises are thought to be over 100 years old.
- Stone Town - Begin the day with a walking tour of Stone Town, the oldest part of Zanzibar City, to explore historical sites, including the slave markets, bustling daily markets, and charming narrow streets, with shopping opportunities later on. Stone Town, the historic capital city of Zanzibar, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage dating back to the 19th century. Reflecting a blend of Arabian, Indian, Persian, and European influences, Zanzibar was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000. Relive the grandeur of this port city as you stroll through the winding streets and view former palaces, the Sultan’s Palace, and Arab mansions. Gain insight into the tragic history of the slave trade.
