The reviews are right — Alfa is a fantastic guide! Fascinating private walking tour of Stone Town. - We enjoyed a fantastic private guided tour of Stone Town with Alfa in early January 2026. We started off with an overview of the complex history of Zanzibar, with Alfa answering our questions in depth, helping us understand the timeline of historical events and personnages. We walked a lot, had plenty of time for photos and discussion, stopped for a local snack. At the Anglican Church (former slave market site), we opted to buy tickets to the museum ($10 per person — NB this seems to be a price increase). Alfa first guided us around the grounds to see the former slave holding cells and the memorial sculpture, then waited as we made our way through the museum at our own pace. The museum is excellent — it takes time to read all of the panels (available in Swahili and English) and to process the horrendous tales being told. Even though we spent considerable time in the museum, Alfa enthusiastically continued the rest of our walking tour as planned. He let us set the pace, and answered any and all questions. We’d happily call on Alfa again — maybe when the House of Wonders and the Old Fort are open for visiting in a few years.

Wonderful guide - Alfa was a very friendly and knowledgeable guide. He was very flexible and willing to accommodate the tour to our needs and desires. He gave us a detailed history of Zanzibar before starting out. He also provided us with useful information, such as that if we visited the Forodhani night market, to make sure we agreed on the price of food before taking any. He showed us the Freddie Mercury museum, and when we said we were not really interested in going in, he was fine with it. We got the impression he would have been fine with however long we wanted to stay inside; he even said the tour could be longer or shorter, however we desired. (I assume that was possible because he did not have another booking after us; probably in the busy season he would have to stick more closely to his schedule.) He showed us more sights and explained about the locations and also the architecture. He waited while we went into a couple of shops. After we got to the outdoor market, my wife was not feeling well so we had to cut the tour short a bit. Alfa walked us back to our hotel (which was close to the starting point).
All in all, this guide seems very knowledgeable and friendly. Let him know any specific desires regarding the tour and I think he will accommodate you to the best of his ability.
One note not specifically related to this tour: there is a lot of reconstruction and repair going on in Stone Town. A couple of attractions at the beginning of the tour (House of Wonders and the Old Fort) were closed to the public due to this, so we got a description but were not able to go inside. Keep this in mind when booking any walking tour of Stone Town. The vast majority of sights and museums are open.

A Must-Book for First Time Visitors of Zanzibar! - It was just Alfa and I for this (yay for a private tour!) and all I can say was this was a PHENOMENAL tour. Alfa was kind enough to pick me up from my hotel as this was my first time in Zanzibar and right off the rip, he gave a robust history lesson on Zanzibar that was incredibly detailed which I truly appreciated. Alfa took me to all the key locations across Stone Town (Freddy Mercury House, Old Fort, The Anglican and Catholic Church, East African Slave Museum and Exhibition) and gave me a history lesson on each place and explained the significance which I truly appreciated as a history buff.
Alfa also guided me through side alleys and roads that tourists typically don’t go through which was amazing since I was able to see how locals in Stone Town live their daily lives without the any tourists distractions around.
Besides the actual tour, I also had some Christmas shopping to do and Alfa without hesitation took me to all the markets and shops that he knew had the items I wanted and I was also able to get a fair price for them.
Alfa was incredibly knowledgeable about all things Stone Town and Zanzibar Island. For three hours, I was able to have an amazing time. I highly recommend this tour if you are new to Zanzibar because not only will you get an amazing history lesson about the UNESCO World Heritage Site, but you will definitely feel comfortable walking around Stone Town by yourself or with your friends/family without the feeling of being lost or overwhelmed. 5/5 Tour!

Well paced ,unrushed ,really great understanding of of history and knowledge of the past and present including information we didnot find with internet searches
We left feeling empowered and decided to do the spice farm tour the next day with Alfa as well which was equally worthwhile !
On the trip up to the north , Alfa organised the taxi up there via his brother - a taxi driver

The best experience with Alpha Tours - I have booked my tour with Alfa Zanzibar Tours& safaris twice. I highly recommend his excellent services and hospitality! Especially last year’s tour to Serengeti was the most unforgettable one. If I could give 10 stars, it was an experience I will cherish forever, and that is largely thanks to our incredible guide.

We learned a lot about the island and also Stone Town.
For cheap souvenirs Alpha also knew a store - there I could buy the T-shirts for My Family at very fair prices!
A local restaurant recommendation we also received - this was worth every cent!
Thanks for the great tour!

Stone Town and Prison Island Tours - Rafae & Irha - Alfa was with us for 3 days and we had a very memorable experience with him! Most notably, the walking tour of Stone town and Prison Island Tour was amazing. Alfa explained Zanzibar's history to us throughout and showed us everything there is to see in Stone Town. It was like taking a tour with someone who actually lived in Stone Town! Prison Island was also phenomenal! Alfa explained the history of the island and what it had been used for throughout the years. It was amazing to see the Aldabra tortoises as well. Would highly recommend Alfa!
