- Shokakuji - In recent times, the principles of Zen meditation (zazen) have gained global recognition. Yet, there are surprisingly few locations where one can experience genuine zazen.
This activity provides a true digital detox and Zen experience—an immersive overnight stay at Shogakuji Temple, a Soto Zen temple situated deep in the mountains, approximately two hours from Tokyo. Over two days and one night, participants can fully immerse themselves in traditional Soto Zen practices amidst the lush natural surroundings.
During the stay, participants will engage in the same practices as Zen monks: sitting meditation (zazen), sutra copying (shakyō), and savoring tenzo ryōri, the traditional vegetarian temple cuisine.
Zazen will be practiced twice—once in the evening and once in the morning. For beginners, the head monk will provide guidance on the fundamentals of posture and breathing. Facing the natural world outside, participants will practice Shikantaza—a Soto Zen meditation technique focused solely on sitting and clearing the mind. This practice aims to harmonize with the sounds of nature: birdsong, the river, the wind.

This activity provides a genuine digital detox and Zen experience—an immersive overnight stay at Shogakuji Temple, a Soto Zen temple located deep in the mountains, approximately two hours from Tokyo.
