- Zhangjiajie National Forest Park - Situated within the breathtaking Wulingyuan Scenic Area near Zhangjiajie city, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park holds the distinction of being China’s first national park. Renowned for its towering sandstone karst pillars enveloped in lush sub-tropical rainforest, the park originated as a state-operated tree farm in 1958 and gained official protection in 1982. The park’s iconic sandstone formations have been sculpted over millennia by water seeping through rock crevices. This water becomes acidic upon contact with carbon dioxide in the soil and air, gradually eroding the rock into the stunning karst landscape visible today. The process is further aided by ice expansion in the crevices during Zhangjiajie’s cold winters, widening the gaps between the karst pillars.
- Tianzi Mountain - The name Tianzi translates to Son of Heaven. This mountain was named after a minority leader who led a revolution approximately 900 years ago. Visitors are captivated by the mountain’s bizarre peaks, each with its own story, reflecting the Chinese tradition of intertwining legends with landscapes. Tianzi Mountain is dubbed ‘the Monarch of the Peak Forest’. From its summit, visitors can admire the entirety of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area. The mountain offers stunning views in every season. Notable spots include Yubi Peak (Imperial Brush Peak), Fairy Spreading Flowers Peak, Warrior Taming a Horse, and Divine Troops.
- Yuanjiajie - Yuanjiajie served as the backdrop for James Cameron’s film “Avatar”. It features massive, uniquely shaped rocks emerging from deep valleys, surrounded by towering mountains, creating a breathtaking, painting-like scene. Key attractions at Yuanjiajie include Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, the First Bridge under the Heaven, Back Garden, and Enchanting Stage. Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, previously known as Southern Sky Column, is a colossal pillar rising dramatically from the valley, standing about 150 meters (165 yards) tall with lush vegetation atop.
- BaiLong Elevator - The Bailong (Hundred Dragons) Elevator, a 335-meter-tall glass elevator, is built onto the side of a massive cliff in the Yuanjiajie scenic area. Construction began in October 1999, and it opened to the public in 2002. The elevator features three lift rooms, each accommodating 48 passengers, traveling at a speed of 3 meters per second. It holds the title of the world’s tallest outdoor sightseeing elevator and the fastest passenger elevator with the largest capacity.
- Golden Whip Brook - Golden Whip Stream is one of the premier hiking routes, offering breathtaking views. The one-way journey spans approximately 7.5 km (4.7 miles) and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to complete. Every moment of the hike is rewarding. The trail follows a murmuring stream, surrounded by clear waters, lush forests, diverse wildflowers, and melodious birds. Travelers should be cautious of playful monkeys eager to snatch food. The fresh air is particularly delightful here. A 40-minute walk along the stream provides a feast of greenery and the soothing sounds of flowing water and birdsong.
