Tunnel Vision Altitude Sickness - After having fantastic experiences on the Golden Round Trip up Pilatus from Luzern HB and hiking on Rigi, my family wanted to go see the glacier on Jungfraujoch. Unfortunately, the experience pretty much ruined an entire day and a half of our trip. I wouldn’t recommend this experience because it’s incredibly expensive, made us feel sick, and compared to other mountain experiences it was not as exciting or enjoyable. We have been up to altitudes that are higher without any negative consequences. However, it may be that they take you up enclosed so quickly or that the experience is mostly in tunnels on the top of the mountain; whatever it was, we all experienced horrible altitude sickness. We all felt sick to our stomachs, faint, off balance, and had horrible headaches. The effects lasted past descent. When speaking with other travelers, they all reported similar altitude sickness experiences here but not on other mountains. It was so bad that my youngest was crying because his headache was so bad at one point. We were extremely well hydrated and even ate while we were on the summit. Nothing helped other than descent. Even after we descended we felt bad for about another half a day after only wanting to sleep to escape feeling sick. It’s clear that altitude sickness is a regular complaint because they had medics walking around helping other tourists that felt the same way. Top of Europe is just not worth the price you pay (both in terms of money spent and the ill effects). My husband even said it is “the Disney of mountaintops”. The Top of Europe’s claim to fame is that it’s the highest train station in Europe. The tour they recommend once you get to the top is almost all contained within tunnels at the summit. It was like herding sheep through tunnels. It was very crowded and people trying to get in the elevators were pushy. The ice palace wasn’t as good as the one at Matterhorn. The exhibits were alright, but nothing special. The experience didn’t live up to our expectations. Most people said the recommended tour would take about three hours. It did. I thought this would include going to walk on the glacier. It did not. If you want to hike on the glacier be sure to add time before decent. There is also tubing and other winter sports opportunities at the top. Add more time for those. I would recommend a light coat (we actually got hot in winter coats because most of the experience was walking in a dark tunnel), walking sticks if you have any mobility issues (because the snow is loose under foot), camera, $30+ per person for a meal, perhaps binoculars, and spending money for the special Lindt chocolates they only make at the top - the highest Lindt chocolate shop in the world. At first, I was upset that we didn’t plan enough time for some of these once-in-a-lifetime experiences (especially hiking on the glacier and tubing). However, the longer we stayed the worse the symptoms of altitude sickness got. We all couldn’t wait to get off the mountain by the time our three hours was up. While the views were good, they weren’t as good as other experiences we’ve had. I would tell any friend to skip this particular experience and hike at a lower altitude in the area or Grindelwald.
