The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque ranks among the largest mosques globally and is a monumental architectural masterpiece that purposefully integrates various Islamic architectural styles. It boasts 82 domes, over 1,000 columns, chandeliers gilded with 24-carat gold, and the largest hand-knotted carpet in the world. The main prayer hall is highlighted by one of the largest chandeliers worldwide.

This mosque stands as a leading symbol of modern Islamic architecture globally. It took 11 years to construct this vast mosque, which spans over 30 acres. The breathtaking view of the Grand Mosque is a visual delight, merging the cultural richness of Islamic art with contemporary architecture and design. The exterior of the Grand Mosque is adorned with Sivec marble from Greece and Macedonia, and its main dome is among the largest mosque domes worldwide. Visitors can admire the mosque’s intricate traditional designs from floor to ceiling. The mosque features numerous attractions, including the world’s largest hand-woven carpet (approximately 60,570 sq ft, crafted by around 1,200 to 1,300 carpet weavers), the largest marble mosaic floral design, the third-largest chandelier in the world (gracing the main prayer hall), and glass panels embellished with Swarovski crystals. The mosque’s interiors are richly adorned with verses from the Holy Quran in three styles of Arabic calligraphy. As visitors explore the premises, they can observe the reflective pools surrounding the mosque, enhancing its beauty. Overall, exploring this colossal architectural marvel is an endless delight. An architectural marvel in finest grandeur - Enroute to our hotel in YAS Island, we made our first stop at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. The grandeur of this architectural marvel is stunning and it simply amazes on how intricate the craftsmanship and how larger than life the mosque is, all at the same time. In Spite of the heat we managed to take a little tour of the outdoor spaces that have a larger waterbody surrounding it. As you enter the mosque, the white marble with inlay work of flowers, brings you a sense of calm and serenity that lets you appreciate how much planning and detail in execution has happened to create such a beautiful structure. The dress code is very strictly followed as it is an active place of worship and certain areas are sealed off for that, though you can view them from outside. Especially the carpet in the prayer area, which holds the record for the largest hand woven carpet in the world, and that intricately crafted chandelier, which holds the record for the second largest chandelier in the world. Constructed between 1994 and 2007, The Grand Mosque was inaugurated in December 2007, with the complex measuring approximately 950 by 1,380 ft, and covering an area of more than 30 acres, and that excludes the exterior landscaping and vehicle parking. The main axis of the building is rotated about 12° south of true west, aligning it in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The project was launched by the late president of the U.A.E., Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with the historical and modern values of architecture and art. In 2004, Sheikh Zayed passed away and he was buried in the courtyard of the mosque. UAE can be proud for this marvellous structure that is definitely going to stand the test of time, and be as intriguing as ever, even after a 100 years, it is an icon that I recommend to visit #apjprecommends Did you know, a smaller replica of the grand mosque exists in the Indonesian city of Surakarta. There is a lot more to the mosque than a place of worship, it has a cultural center, library, and a small mall that sells souvenirs, a food court, but more on that in the next post.
