W.E.B. DuBois Center - Named after William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, an African-American civil rights leader who became a Ghanaian citizen in the 1960s, this center is a tribute to the ‘Father of Pan-Africanism’. It is the former residence of Du Bois and his wife, where they are now interred. The center features his personal library, a small museum showcasing personal items like his graduation robes, and a mausoleum encircled by Asante stools. Additionally, it includes a seminar room, a restaurant, a gallery, an amphitheater, and a research center dedicated to Pan-African history and culture.
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park - Also known as the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, this park is the final resting place of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The museum honors his efforts in liberating Ghana, formerly the Gold Coast, from colonial rule. It displays his personal belongings, publications, and photographs depicting his life and interactions with notable figures of his era.
Independence Square - Commissioned by Kwame Nkrumah to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s visit, Independence Square, or Black Star Square, is a vast concrete area with spectator stands accommodating around 30,000 people. The Independence Arch serves as an inspiration for other African nations seeking independence, alongside the Flame of African Liberation. The roundabout before the square features the Black Star Gate, also known as the Black Star Monument, constructed in 1961.
Center for National Culture - Known as the Arts Center, this crafts market offers a wide array of Ghanaian-inspired arts and crafts. It’s a fantastic shopping destination in Accra, featuring items like woven Kente cloth, wooden sculptures, earrings, and fashion accessories paired with the latest African attire from across Ghana.
Eastern Region
Aburi Botanical Gardens - Located on the hills of Aburi in Ghana’s Eastern region, this beautiful and popular garden is just a short distance from Accra. It boasts hundreds of plants with medicinal properties used for treating various ailments, creating spices, and beautification. A carved tree symbolizing life’s struggles is a notable feature. Many trees were planted by colonial masters and significant African leaders.
Tetteh Quashie Cocoa Farm - Situated in Akuapem Mampong, Eastern Ghana, this farm offers tourists a firsthand experience of cocoa cultivation. Visitors can observe the planting of cocoa seeds, the farmer’s processes, and the harvesting and drying of seeds and pods.
