Debre Libanos serves as a significant monastic hub for Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. The monastery was established by the esteemed 13th-century mystic, Saint Teclehaimanot. Nearby, a small cave, adjacent to the recently constructed church, is believed to be where he stood on one leg for seven years, leading to the atrophy and loss of the other.
Upon reaching Debre Libanos, the first stop will be at the Jemma Gorge. The Jemma River, a tributary of the Nile, features a dramatic drop of nearly 1000 meters to the valley below. At the gorge and in the surrounding forest near the church, visitors can anticipate sightings of the Banded Barbet, Black-headed Forest Oriole, White-billed Starling, Red-billed Starling, White-winged Cliff Chat, White-backed Black Tit, White-cheeked Turaco, and Hemprich’s Hornbill. Additionally, one of Ethiopia’s endemic mammals, the Gelada or bleeding-heart baboon, can also be observed.
