- Portuguese Bridge - The Portuguese Bridge was built in the 17th century, possibly by Indian or Portuguese craftsmen, either before the Jesuits were expelled in 1633 or later during the Gondarine period. Even if the bridge is just over a century old, rather than four centuries, it still stands as a remarkable testament to the enduring masonry skills in the country, inherited from the earlier Gondarine era. The bridge spans 33 meters from bank to bank, rises ten meters above the perennial stream, and features three arches. The largest central arch stretches between two large boulders, which nature conveniently provided across the stream bed. Low castellations line the 2.75-meter roadway on top. The bridge is so expertly constructed that, in some areas, it is difficult to discern where the masonry ends and the natural rock begins.
- Debre Libanos - Debre Libanos is a monastery in Ethiopia, located northwest of Addis Ababa in the Oromia region. The monastery was founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haimanot. Alongside the church, visitors cross a river and continue on foot up a hill for about 15 minutes. According to legend, the Ethiopian saint Tekle Haimanot prayed for 29 years, standing on one foot for so long that the other foot fell off. Here, people line up to receive holy water, believed to be a sign of the saint’s prayer.
