A Jungle Adventure with a Personal Touch

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that offer both adventure and education for my kids. When I heard about the Monkey Sanctuary Trails in Akumal, I knew it was a must-visit. Our guide, German, picked us up right from our hotel, and from the moment we met him, it felt like we were spending the day with an old friend. His warmth and knowledge set the tone for what would be an unforgettable day.

Our first stop was the monkey sanctuary, where we were joined by a local friend, Jordy. Together, we embarked on a hike through the lush jungle, spotting several families of spider monkeys along the way. The kids were thrilled, and I loved seeing their eyes light up with each new discovery. German and Jordy shared fascinating insights about the monkeys and the sanctuary’s conservation efforts, making the experience both fun and educational.

Thrills and Tranquility in Nature

After our jungle trek, it was time for some adrenaline-pumping fun. We zipped over the jungle canopy, taking in breathtaking views of the lush landscape below. The zipline ride ended at a serene lake, where we hopped into a canoe for a short and peaceful paddle. It was a perfect balance of excitement and relaxation, and suitable for all activity levels, making it an ideal family adventure.

The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the visit to a private cenote. German had thought of everything, providing snorkel gear and flashlights for us to explore the crystal-clear waters. The cenote was a magical place, with limestone formations and bats fluttering above. For the more adventurous, there was even an opportunity to cliff dive into the refreshing water. Facilities were available for changing, and German ensured we were comfortable throughout.

A Taste of Mayan Culture

Our adventure didn’t end there. German surprised us with a visit to a nearby Mayan village for lunch. We were warmly welcomed by Don Pedro and his family, who performed a traditional Mayan blessing. It was a heartwarming experience that added a cultural dimension to our day.

We had the chance to make tortillas, which was a hit with the kids, especially since they were gluten-free to accommodate my dietary needs. The meal was a feast of flavors, with fresh tortillas, dipping sauces, and a taste of Mayan chocolate and liquor. It was a delightful way to immerse ourselves in the local culture and support the community.

Before leaving, we purchased handmade gifts and homemade liquor and honey from the locals. It was a wonderful way to end our day, knowing that our visit had a positive impact on the community. German’s dedication to sustainability and supporting local people was evident throughout the tour, making it not just an adventure, but a meaningful experience for our family.
