- 238.5 Parks Hwy - Embarking on a journey with a knowledgeable local naturalist offers an exceptional opportunity to explore the intricate interplay among flora, fauna, and humans amidst the breathtaking wilderness of Alaska. As you traverse from the boreal forests at lower altitudes to the unique subarctic ecosystems such as taiga and tundra, you’ll encounter permafrost zones and majestic mountains that serve as habitats for species uniquely adapted to the severe climate. Your guide will pause often to provide detailed explanations.\n\nPaths can generally be characterized as moderate, featuring tree roots, uneven terrain, and occasional muddy patches. Given the Alaskan environment, it’s essential to come prepared with outdoor essentials: durable hiking footwear, water, a coat, and rain protection, not to mention a camera and a keen interest in the wonders of this vast territory. Some fundamental gear is provided, including rainwear, hydration, protective overboots, and walking sticks (available upon request).\n\nThis excursion is designed for enjoyment rather than intense physical exercise, encompassing three hours of continuous ambulation on trails that may be natural and rugged. The typical walking speed is around one mile per hour, with plenty of pauses. There will be opportunities for rest, hydration, social interaction, and even berry picking when in season.

Informative stroll in The Park - This is not a strenuous hike at all. Andy really knew his flora and fauna of Denali. Additionally he explained the early history of the Park and the leaders that made it work.

Beautiful easy hike in Denali - Andy was a great guide. Funny and knowledgeable about the foliage and animals. We did not see any big wildlife sadly but altogether a good hike. We packed good rain gear which was needed.

Get an in-depth look into of Denali’s flora and fauna from an experienced and personable naturalist - Alex led us on a terrific walking tour of Denali. He’s full of knowledge about so many things. The tour left us with a deep appreciation of the plants, animals and indigenous people of the area. Ask questions as you walk! Alex is happy to answer at length—and to consult his nature books and guides if he needs to confirm a fact.
There are gentle uphills and downhills on this 2-mile walk, but this is not a rugged hike. Alex makes it clear from the get-go that the tour is not about spotting animals, though he often discusses their behavior and the interplay between the plants and animals (including humans). You’ll get a couple of nice overlooks for photos, but most of your attention will be focused on the ground at plants, lichens and fungi, That was fine by us, ‘cos we learned so much.
It’s not a cheap tour, but you are paying for quality. We definitely felt it was worth it.
