Charyn Canyon National Park - The origins of Charyn Canyon date back approximately 25 million years, when the area now known as Charyn was largely covered by Ili Lake. Once the lake dried up, the waterway joined the Ili River. Over time, the water flow’s strength increased, leading to a greater volume of rock being eroded from the ground. Gradually, the water carved deeper into the earth, while the wind sculpted the limestone cliffs into fascinating shapes. The result of hundreds of thousands of years of natural artistry is a canyon that extends 154 km in length, with cliffs ranging from 100 to 300 meters in height.
Charyn Canyon is situated 200 km southeast of Almaty and is part of the Charyn National Park, established on February 23, 2004. The canyon is made up of sedimentary rocks that are approximately 12 million years old. The Valley of Castles is a particularly intriguing spot for visitors.
A Day of Adventure at Two Stunning Lakes
Kolsai Lake - The Kolsai Lakes are justifiably regarded as some of the most stunning natural sites in Kazakhstan. Also known as the blue necklace of the Northern Tien Shan, this name perfectly captures their breathtaking beauty. “Kolsai” translates to “lake in a gorge.” Each of the three Kolsai Lakes is situated at different altitudes above sea level. The Kolsai River originates from ancient glaciers on the Kungey-Alatau mountain ranges and flows sequentially into each lake. The lakes are notable for their considerable depth and freshwater quality, with the deepest point recorded at 80 m. The lake bottoms feature a gentle relief without prominent rocky outcrops.
Lake Kaindy - Lake Kaindy is an extraordinary natural wonder that formed relatively recently, in the early 20th century, due to a powerful earthquake in 1911 near the city of Verny (Almaty). This event created an impassable barrier of fallen rocks and soil in the Kaindy gorge, blocking the river of the same name. Consequently, water began to fill the gorge, eventually forming a large, beautiful lake. Its uniqueness lies in the submerged coniferous forest that remains hidden beneath the water’s surface.
