• Isurumuniya Temple - The Isurumuniya Viharaya is situated near the Tisa Wewa and is celebrated for its exquisite stone carvings, the most renowned being the “Isurumuniya Lovers.” Other notable carvings include the Horseman, Elephant Pond, and the Royal Family.

To the north of Isurumuniya is the Ranmasu Uyana, or Royal Pleasure Garden. This location is historically significant as it is believed that Prince Saliya met Asokamala, his future bride, in this garden centuries ago. The “Isurumuniya Lovers” sculpture is a 6th-century Gupta-style carving.

• Ranmasu Uyana - Ranmasu Uyana is a park in Sri Lanka, covering approximately 40 acres (16 ha). It is a distinguished example of Sri Lankan garden architecture from the pre-Christian era. An inscription found in Vessagiriya indicates that water was supplied to the park by Tessa Wewa and then released to the rice fields surrounding Isurumuni Vihara.

• Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi - The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, the sacred tree of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, is the oldest living tree documented in world history. It is a sapling from the historical Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Planted in 288 BCE, it is the oldest living human-planted tree with a known planting date. It was brought from Buddhagaya, India, by Ven. Sanghamitta Therini, sister of Arhant Mahinda, who introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka.

• Thissa Wewa - Thissa Wewa is an artificial reservoir constructed by King Devanam Piyathissa in the 3rd century to enhance the water supply to the capital city of Anuradhapura.

• Ruwanwelisaya - Ruwanwelisaya is known by many names, including Mahathupa, Ran Welisaya, Swarnamali Chethiya, and Rathnamali Dageba.

Regarded as an icon of architectural brilliance in ancient Sri Lanka, Ruwanwelisaya is one of the world’s tallest monuments, standing at 103 m (338 ft) with a circumference of 290 m (951 ft). It is also recognized as one of the Solosmasthana (the 16 sacred sites of veneration) and the Atamasthana (the eight sacred sites in the ancient sacred city of Anuradhapura), believed to have been visited by Buddha during his three visits to Sri Lanka.

• Thuparamaya Ruwanweliseya Walkway - The Thuparamaya stupa is located in the highly sacred Mahamewna Uyana in Anuradhapura and is a significant and frequently visited site. It was constructed in the 3rd century BCE during the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa, at the request of Arahat Mahinda, an envoy of King Asoka. It is the earliest stupa built in the country following the advent of Buddhism. It is believed to house the sacred right collarbone relic of the Buddha, and some theorize it originally contained the sacred tooth relic.

• Abayagiriya Stupa - The Abhayagiri stupa is part of the aramic complex of Abhayagiriya Viharaya, built during the reign of King Vattagamini Abaya (commonly known as King Valagamba) in the 1st Century BC. It is the second-largest stupa on the island today.

Currently, the main attraction of this aramic complex is the massive Abayagiri Stupa, which stands at 74.98 meters to the tip of the damaged spire. According to the 5th-century traveler, Chinese monk Fa-Hsien, this stupa was 400 feet (122 meters) in height and adorned with gold, silver, and various jewels. There was also a 20-foot (6.1 meters) high Buddha statue made of green jade.

• Samadhi Statue - The Samadhi Statue, depicting the Dyana Mudra (Meditation Position) at Mahamevna Park, Anuradhapura, is considered one of the finest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka, located among the extensive remains of the ancient religious city of Anuradhapura.

The Samadhi statue stands 7 feet 3 inches tall and is believed to have been constructed in the 3rd or 4th century using dolomite marble. It is thought to be one of four similar statues facing North, East, and West. The Samadhi statue was found in its current location with damages, particularly a fallen nose, which was reconstructed and opened to the public in 1888.

• Twin Baths (Kuttam Pokuna) - Kuttam Pokuna, or the twin ponds, are another marvel of ancient Sri Lankan hydrologic engineering. These two ponds belong to the Abayagiri aramic complex and may have been used by monks for bathing. The origins of these ponds are unknown, but they are thought to have been built during the reign of King Aggabodhi I (575-608).

• Jethawanaramaya Stupa - The Jethawanaramaya Stupa is one of the tallest stupas in Sri Lanka. It was built by King Mahasen between 273 and 301. The Jethawanaramaya stupa holds the relic of the Lord Buddha’s sash or waist tie. It is also considered one of the prominent destinations listed among the sixteen places (solosmasthana, as the locals say) that a devoted Buddhist should visit at least once in their lifetime. Visiting this stupa is not limited to Buddhists; anyone with an appreciation for ancient irrigation and cultural heritage of Sri Lanka should also visit the Jethawanaramaya Stupa.

• Mihintale - Mihintale mountain, with the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, became a residential area for venerable monks led by Arahath Mahinda Mahathera. With royal patronage, the sanctuary soon housed numerous monastic buildings—stupas, uposathgharas, bodhigharas—to serve the monks. Sixty-eight cave dwellings provided the monks with shade and shelter. Mihintale, a sanctuary for many thousands of laymen and holy men, offered all the facilities and amenities for basic living.
